Snoop Dogg is also known for his signature drawled rapping style, incorporating melodic rhymes, repetition, and word play. He is credited with popularizing the use of ‘-izzle’ speak in the hip-hop industry, and introducing the gangsta funk subgenre of gangsta rap. Snoop not only reinvented the rap game alongside other rap legends like Dr. Dre and Tupac, but also paved the way for the future of the hip hop world.

Snoop Dogg: Life of Da Party

Early Career

Before & After Meeting Dr. Dre

Shortly after graduating high school, Snoop Dogg began recording homemade mixtapes with his cousins, rappers Nate Dogg and Lil’ ½ Dead, and friend, rapper Warren G. The four of them formed a group and called themselves ‘213’ after the area code for Long Beach, California.

As a teenager, Snoop recorded a solo freestyle during this time that found its way into the hands of legendary rapper and producer Dr. Dre, who then invited Snoop to audition for his record label, Death Row Records, then known as Future Shock Records.

Snoop signed with the label in 1991, and soon began recording under the name Snoop Doggy Dogg.

Meteoric Rise to Fame

Snoop began to attract significant attention before even releasing anything on his own, as he was heavily featured on Dr. Dre’s debut album The Chronic (1992).

Soon after, Snoop released his own debut album, Doggystyle (1993), which was met with immense critical acclaim and was a huge commercial success.

Gangsta Rap Legend

Snoop quickly became known as a defining figure of the gangsta rap genre, while separating himself from other rappers at the same time.

While most other gangsta rappers shouted their lyrics with a more aggressive delivery, Snoop had a far more laid-back and nonchalant tone. He spoke softly, and delivered his lyrics calmly, which set him apart and allowed him to develop his own brand as an artist.

Second Solo Album and Further Success

Snoop Dogg continued to dominate the hip-hop world into the late ‘90s, releasing his second solo studio album, Tha Doggfather, in 1996. The release of his second album marked a shift in Snoop’s rap persona, as the album featured an even softer approach to the G-Funk genre than his last album.

Snoop sought to move away from his gangsta roots after the death of close friend and collaborator, Tupac Shakur, who was murdered in 1996 at the age of 25.

Snoop’s Mainstream Sound in the Late ‘90s

Snoop continued this career shift to a more mainstream style of hip-hop in 1998, when he signed with Master P’s No Limit Records, and released his third album with the label, Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998), later that year.

He continued to see success in the mainstream rap game throughout the rest of the ‘90s and into the 2000s, adopting a more “pimp” style persona, contrasting his former “gansta” image.
