Christopher “Chris” Crosby Farley (February 15, 1964 – December 18, 1997) was an actor and comedian. He was a 1982 graduate of Edgewood High School, in Madison, WI, where he was a member of the varsity football team. His yearbook’s senior summary states that he also participated in wrestling, track, ski club, and class council. Farley first became interested in comedy in college and performed with Second City before becoming a Saturday Night Live cast member in 1990. Among his most popular recurring characters was Matt Foley, the motivational speaker who lived “in a van down by the river.” In 1995, Farley left SNL and turned to big-screen projects. He co-starred in Tommy Boy (1995) and Beverly Hills Ninja (1997), among other films. Farley was originally cast as Shrek and had voiced almost all of the dialogue in the first movie before his untimely death. His final (and uncredited) film role was the character of Jimmy No-Nose in 1998’s Dirty Work. Farley posthumously received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005.
