In 1962, shortly after being discharged from the Air Force, Norris moved back to Torrance, California and opened his own martial arts studio. He picked up martial arts in the Air Force, and opened the studio as a way to refine his skills and begin training for competitive tournaments.
Norris competed in many tournaments throughout the 1960s, with a notable win over Joe Lewis at S. Henry Cho’s All-American Karate Championship at Madison Square Garden in 1967. Norris also won the International Karate Championship title in the same year.
Norris went on to defend his All-American title in 1968, and his International Karate Championship title in 1969, in addition to earning the Karate triple crown for the most tournament victories in a year.

When Norris was 12, the family moved to Prairie Village, Kansas, and then to Torrance, California. His parents divorced when he was 16 due to his father’s alcoholism, and he, his mother, and brothers permanently separated themselves from his father. Norris described himself during this time as a deeply introverted child due to the embarrassment he felt from his father’s behavior.
