John Royce “Johnny” Mathis (born September 30, 1935) is a singer. He graduated from George Washington High School in 1954. While at George Washington, Mathis served as student body treasurer and was a member of the basketball and track teams. His senior yearbook states, “When the name Johnny Mathis is mentioned the hearts of Washingtonians open up to a boy with a magic voice that was loved by everyone.” Mathis started singing as a young teenager, and it was soon evident that he had a lot of talent. During college, however, he had the chance to try out for the U.S. Olympic team as a high jumper. He ended up having to choose between the tryout and keeping an appointment to record his first album. He chose the latter, and the rest is history. Mathis has recorded over 70 studio albums, incorporating a variety of musical genres (jazz, pop, Brazilian music, etc.), and is considered to be the third best-selling musical artist of the 20th century.
