Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr. (born August 14, 1959) is a former professional basketball player who spent 13 seasons as a Los Angeles Lakers point guard. Given the nickname “Magic” as a sophomore, he graduated from Everett High School (in Lansing, MI) in 1977, where he was an outstanding varsity basketball player and also a member of the homecoming court. Johnson was an All-Metro, All-State, and All-American player who helped lead his team to its first state championship during his senior year. And, according to his 1977 yearbook, he was someone “to watch for in the future.”

After two years of stellar play at Michigan State (including an NCAA championship matchup against Indiana State’s Larry Bird, his future NBA rival), Johnson ended up as the number one draft pick in the 1979 NBA draft. His career as a Laker included five championships, three MVP awards, and 12 All-Star appearances. Johnson was also a member of the gold medal-winning “Dream Team” at the 1992 Olympics. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 (and again in 2010 as a member of the “Dream Team”).
