Mark Andrew Spitz (born February 10, 1950) is a former Olympic swimmer. He graduated from Santa Clara High School, in Santa Clara, CA, in 1968, where he participated in swimming and water polo. Under the expert coaching of George Haines (who had already coached for the 1960 U.S. Olympic swim team), Spitz’s natural talent was nurtured and developed. Spitz was already on the varsity swim team as a freshman, and his junior yearbook mentions that he was a national Amateur Athletic Union champion as well as an Olympic contender for 1968. In fact, Santa Clara ended up producing six Olympic team contenders for that year (including Spitz). In the 1968 Olympics, Spitz brought home four medals, including two golds. In the 1972 Olympics, he won seven gold medals (a record that stood until it was finally broken by Michael Phelps in 2008), with record times for all seven events. Spitz was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1977 and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983.
