Mary Nell Steenburgen (born February 8, 1953) is an actress. She attended North Little Rock High School and Northeast High School (both in North Little Rock, AR), graduating from the latter in 1971. Steenburgen’s senior yearbook lists a number of activities in which she was involved, including Chargettes, Pep Club, and French Club. She was also actively pursuing drama, as evidenced by the photos from her starring performance in Our Town. Steenburgen landed her first big role, in 1978’s Goin’ South, after being discovered by the film’s director, Jack Nicholson. Two years later, she brought home an Academy award for Melvin and Howard (1980). Steenburgen has acted on both the big and small screens since the 1980s. Other films of note include Cross Creek (1983), Parenthood (1989), Philadelphia (1993), Elf (2003), and The Help(2011). Television work includes the 1985 miniseries Tender is the Night, a starring role in Joan of Arcadia, and roles in Justified and Wilfred. Steenburgen also acts occasionally with husband Ted Danson, including recurring appearances (as themselves) on Curb Your Enthusiasm. Since 2015, she has portrayed Gail Klosterman in the comedy series The Last Man on Earth. Steenburgen was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009.
