Mary Louise “Meryl” Streep (born June 22, 1949) is an actress. She is a 1966 graduate of Bernards High School, in Bernardsville, NJ. While at Bernards, she was a member of the varsity cheerleading squad, chorus, and the school’s newspaper staff. Streep, who began acting professionally in New York in the 1970s, is regarded as one of the best and most versatile actresses of her generation. Although initially drawn to the stage, Robert DeNiro’s performance in Taxi Driver inspired her to pursue a career in film. She won her first Oscar for her co-starring role in 1979’s Kramer vs. Kramer. Streep’s performance in The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981) established her as a leading actress. Other early work includes Sophie’s Choice (1982), Silkwood(1983), and Out of Africa (1985). She-Devil (1989) and Postcards from the Edge (1990) demonstrated her ability to do comedy. Other notable films include The Bridges of Madison County (1995), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Doubt (2008), Julie & Julia (2009), and The Iron Lady (2011). More recently, she starred in 2016’s Florence Foster Jenkins. Streep has been nominated for more Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards than any other actor.
