Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (born January 17, 1964) is First Lady of the United States. She graduated from Young Magnet High School, in Chicago, IL, in 1981, where she served in student council, was a member of the National Honor Society, and was salutatorian of her senior class. After attending Princeton, Obama obtained a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1988. Shortly thereafter she became an associate at the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin, where she met her future husband, Barack Obama (whom she mentored when he was a summer associate). She moved away from law in 1991 to work in public sector positions for Chicago city government. In 1996, she became Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago. She made a move to University of Chicago Hospitals in 2002, where she ended up as Vice President for Community and External Affairs. Obama became First Lady in 2008, when her husband was first elected President. Some of the causes for which she has advocated while in the White House have included nutrition, physical activity (the Let’s Move! initiative), poverty awareness, and supporting military families. A popular First Lady, Obama has become a positive role model for women.
