Peter “Pete” Clay Carroll (born September 15, 1951) is head coach of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks. He is a 1969 graduate of Redwood High School, in Larkspur, CA, where he played football, baseball, and basketball. He was also a member of the school’s honor society as a senior. In 2009, Carroll was inducted into his former high school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

After graduating from college (where he continued to play football), Carroll tried out for the World Football League’s Honolulu Hawaiians but didn’t make the cut. He did, however, find a niche in coaching. His former coach at University of the Pacific hired him as a graduate assistant, and he spent the next three years in that position.

Carroll held coaching jobs at several other schools (including Ohio State and North Carolina State) before landing his first job in the NFL in 1984, when he became defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills. He went on to coach for the Minnesota Vikings, the New York Jets (where he held his first head coach position), the San Francisco 49ers, and the New England Patriots. Following this NFL stint, Carroll was hired as head coach of the USC Trojans in 2000. He remained there until 2009, coaching two teams to national championships.

In 2010, Carroll returned to the NFL, becoming the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. In 2013, he led the team to its first NFL championship.

Carroll is one of only three football coaches to have won both a Super Bowl and a college football national championship. He is also known for his philanthropic work. While coaching at USC, he helped start the charity A Better LA, aimed at reducing gang-related violence.

Awards (partial list):
• ESPN.com National Coach of the Year. 2003
• Pac-10 Coach of the Year. 2006
