Phillip Calvin “Phil” McGraw (born September 1, 1950), better known as Dr. Phil, is a television host and former psychologist. He graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School, in Shawnee Mission, KS, in 1968, where he participated in varsity football and track. McGraw earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1979 and was a practicing psychologist for a number of years. He co-founded a legal consulting firm with a partner in 1990, which was hired by Oprah Winfrey in the mid-1990s. She was very impressed with McGraw and eventually invited him to appear on her show. His appearance evolved into a weekly relationship and life strategy segment. In 2002, McGraw started his own daily TV show, Dr. Phil (produced by Winfrey’s Harpo Studios), in which he offered guests life advice on different topics. This program is now in syndication in the U.S. as well as a number of other countries. McGraw has also written numerous books in the self-help genre.
