Richard Tiffany Gere (born August 31, 1949) is an actor. He graduated from North Syracuse High School, in North Syracuse, NY, in 1967. While in school, he participated in theater (playing the starring role in The King and I), football, band, student council, and gymnastics. Gere started his acting career in the 1970s and surged to stardom the following decade with starring roles in American Gigolo and An Officer and a Gentleman. Other notable performances have included roles in Pretty Woman, Primal Fear, Runaway Bride, and Chicago. Gere is also active in humanitarian causes, campaigning for human rights in Tibet and AIDS awareness, among other causes. He was awarded the Medal of Gratitude by Albanian president Bamir Topi in 2012.
