Sally Kristen Ride (May 26, 1951 – July 23, 2012) was an American physicist and astronaut. She graduated with the class of 1968 from Westlake School for Girls in Los Angeles, California. In high school, she was captain of the tennis team, played volleyball and basketball, and was a member of Honor Society.

In her senior yearbook, Ride called herself a gross underachiever. However, that doesn’t seem to be fitting for all her accomplishments. She went on to Stanford University where she graduated with her Ph.D. in physics. Ride joined NASA in 1978 and on June 18, 1983, became the first American woman in space at the age of 32.
