Shelley Lee Long (born August 23, 1949) is an actress. She is a 1967 graduate of South Side High School, in Fort Wayne, IN. While at South Side, she participated in the Wranglers forensics club and Assemblies Workshop (where she led her senior year Thanksgiving Assembly as a “turkey-narrator”), among other activities. Long’s early acting experience included The Second City comedy troupe and work in television commercials. Her first big-screen appearance was in A Small Circle of Friends (1980). In 1982, she began acting in the role for which she is best known: Diane Chambers in the popular sitcom Cheers. After five seasons, she left the show to pursue other opportunities, but she returned for the series finale. And in the following year, she revived the role for several episodes of Frasier. In addition to other television work, Long has acted in a number of films, including Night Shift (1982), Irreconcilable Differences (1984), The Money Pit(1986), Troop Beverly Hills (1989), The Brady Bunch Movie (1995), and Dr. T & the Women (2000). More recently, she has made numerous guest appearances on television shows, including a recurring role as DeDe Pritchett on Modern Family.
