Thomas “Tom” John Brokaw (born February 6, 1940) is a TV journalist and author. He is a 1958 graduate of Yankton High School, in Yankton, SD. As a high school student, Brokaw was involved in many activities, including student council, Boys State, National Forensic League, yearbook staff, and the newspaper staff. He also participated in football, basketball, and track. Brokaw got his start in television broadcasting in 1960, at KTIV (in Sioux City, IA), where he added newscaster and weatherman to his resume. After stints with a couple of other stations, he began working with NBC in 1966. By 1973, he had progressed from late-night anchor for KNBC (in Los Angeles) to White House correspondent and Nightly News Saturday anchor. A few years later, he became host of The Today Show, a post he held until 1981. Brokaw moved into his most visible role in 1982, as anchor (and managing editor) of NBC Nightly News. He kept this position until 2004, by which time he was considered the most popular news personality in the country. Brokaw has continued working with NBC as Special Correspondent as well as participating in other news-related and documentary projects. He has also written a number of books, including The Greatest Generation (1998). Brokaw is the only person to have hosted all three major NBC News programs (The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and Meet the Press). In addition to receiving seven Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.
