He was born in Queens<\/a>, New York City, in the Flushing neighborhood and grew up in Little Italy, a neighborhood in Manhattan\u2019s borough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Scorsese is part Italian<\/a>, with both of his grandparents having immigrated from Italy to America. Fun fact: his original family surname was Scozzese, but became Scorsese due to a minor transcription error. <\/p>\n\n\n\n From a very young age, his parents used to take him to the movies, which is how his interest in the industry began. You might be surprised to know that, however, he initially wanted to become a priest. But, after failing the first year at the preparatory seminary he attended, he turned to filmmaking. And what a boon that turned out to be for us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scorsese was raised Roman Catholic in a predominantly Catholic neighborhood. He graduated from the boys-only Cardinal Hayes High School<\/a> in Bronx, New York, in 1960. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Throughout his childhood, Scorsese was a frail kid with asthma, which meant he couldn\u2019t play any sports, or even take part in normal kid activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n After failing his seminary, Scorsese attended and graduated from New York University<\/a>\u2019s Washington Square College (which is currently known as the College of Arts and Science<\/a>) in 1964 with a BS in film communications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n It was during his undergraduate years that he made his first two student films: What\u2019s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This?<\/em><\/a> (1963)<\/em>, which was a short 9-minute film, followed by It\u2019s Not Just You, Murray! (1964)<\/em><\/a>, a 15-minute picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He also graduated with a Master of Arts<\/a> from New York University in 1968. Here, he made his third short film<\/a>, The Big Shave (1967)<\/em>, as well as his very first feature-length film, Who\u2019s That Knocking at My Door (1967)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Martin Scorsese is probably a familiar face as a certified Hollywood legend. On the technical front, you\u2019ll see that a lot of movies share similar characteristics, such as long shots, freeze frames, quick fades, and slow-motion techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Martin Scorsese is also a film preservationist and founded The Film Foundation<\/a>, a non-profit organization that seeks to protect and preserve the history of motion pictures. He also created the World Cinema Project<\/a> in 2007 to preserve, restore, and provide access to movies from across the world (especially from marginalized countries). <\/p>\n\n\n\n Over his 50+ year career, Scorsese has bagged several well-deserved awards<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n While these are his major awards, this is certainly not an exhaustive list!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scorsese was born to mother Catherine (Cappa) Scorsese and father Charles Scorsese. He also had an older brother, Frank Scorsese, who died in 2021<\/a> at the age of 85.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Martin Scorsese\u2019s parents both worked in the garment district throughout his childhood. His father was a clothes presser and wardrobe consultant, while his mother was a seamstress. Both of them have made several cameos in Scorsese\u2019s films!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scorsese has been married a total of 5 times<\/a> (and divorced 4 times).
