Theresa's Story
It was most unfortunate that I had to run away from an abusive home life in NJ. My step grandmother lived on the 4000 block of Madison Avenue, across from Newsome Park. Grandma Martha provided shelter for me during my 8th grade school year at G W Carver High School. Despite segregation, it was a rich and rewarding experience for me to be surrounded by loving African American peers and staff members. I had come from a NJ school district in which there were very few African Americans students or staff. My return home led to eventual foster care.
As much as I would like to have been a Carver High Graduate, that is not the case. Classmates picked the wrong school and I am not able to correct the error. I graduated from Camden High School in Camden, NJ with the Mighty Revolutionary Class of 1968. We demonstrated and closed down the school in a demand for a more inclusive curriculum that included African American History, etc...
I worked in many vocations before attending community college and beginning a career in the field of education. Those jobs included working as a cashier, a nanny, a factory worker, a telephone solicitor and a receptionist/secretary at the African American YMCA in Camden, NJ. Attained an AS Degree in 1978 and a BA Degree in Education with certification in Special Education in 1987. Graduated...Expand for more
from both colleges with honors.
Spent 26 years in the Field of Education. Started as a Classroom Assistant at the Elementary level. Upon graduation from CC, became an Instructional Assistant with a preschool Handicapped program. During that time, I worked for the Camden School District and went to school full time at night to become a Special Education Teacher. Taught at all levels from elementary to Alternative high school in addition to teaching adults in a psychiatric facility. Retired in 2006 after surviving a hit and run accident as a pedestrian. Received physical therapy and needed to give my body an opportunity to mend. The staff gave me a wonderful retirement party at the end of the 2006 school year.
Much of my time is spent attending Civic meetings and affairs. I am a supporter of Mayor Dana L. Redd. We must become solution oriented and move from looking to blame someone for less than desirable conditions. Looking forward to becoming a mentor as well as a tutor to help at risk children learn to read.
My current status is single. Have been married and divorced twice. I am the mother of a very successful 39 year old daughter who is a Pine Forge Academy and Howard U alum.
