Robert's Story
Went to a bunch of schools: Bridgeview School (1955), Nottingham School (1956-59), Justice School (1959-61), back to Bridgeview School (1961), Orland Center School, Orland Park IL (1961), Orland Elementary School (1962-63) and Carl Sandburg HS - Palos IL (1963-67). I took several college courses at Moraine Valley Community College (1976-78 & 1988-89). I never had an opportunity to form any lasting friendships by moving from school to school. This may have been the reason I was pretty much an introvert at Sandburg. I was somewhat shy and uncomfortable at CS. I felt out of place and didn't seem to fit in any of the Sandburg cliques.
I have fond memories of Turtlehead Lake sub races, drive-in theaters, Bachelor's Grove, Swallow Cliff, Starved Rock, St Michael's dances, school sock hops, high school basketball, baseball, football, proms, synchronized line position to square dance with certain girls, ditching school with Jim Maroney and John Pour to see the movie, "The Wild Angels", graduation week and cool cars. I remember Irv Richard's "57" Chevy that failed to lay rubber. I played a lot of sandlot baseball on Raface' Sod Farm's peoperty with Rick Wilson, Rich Adee, Ron Aukerman, his brother Gary, Steve Thompson and others. I really wanted to play on the Sandburg baseball team but did not get along with Coach Eade.
I delivered newspapers morning and afternoons my 8th and freshman year. I worked at the Farmer's Daughter Restaurant and Mr. Ed's IGA Foods, working with Dan Peterson and Larry Clark at both places. Dan and I were fired from Farmer's Daughter when a bartender caught us playing a dime slot machine in the basement. We both got our jobs back within a day or two.
I didn't go to college after high school, instead enlisted in the US Navy, August 1967. Boot Camp at Great Lakes. I was sent to Philadelphia, to attend a Damage Control "A" school. After graduating, I was assigned to serve on the USS Saratoga (CVA 60). The carrier was dry...Expand for more
-docked in Philly's Naval Shipyard. I was on the ship less than five months when I received orders for Vietnam. I was sent to SERE. Escape & surival training in Little Creek, Virginia. I landed in Vietnam on August 1, 1968, assigned to NSADaNang Small Craft Repair Facility. Finishing my tour in Nam, I received my final orders to be stationed at The Key West Naval Station in Florida. Honorably discharged in 1971. .
After my military service, I worked at the 3M Company, Bedford Park, IL (1971-73), The Bridgeview Police Department, Bridgeview IL (1973-77), Noon Hour Food Products, Chicago, IL (1977-80), The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasdena, California (1980-81), Rush-St Luke's Medical Center, Chicago,Izl (1982), The Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, IL (1983-93), Triumph Twist Drill, Rhinelander, WI (1993-99). I became disabledlate 1999 and was unable to work.. I've survived on Social Security and VA disability since.
I'm married Charlene Zembruski in 1976. We have a daughter (Kristin) and a son (Ed). Ed named our dog Kumatora, which means Bear-Tiger in Japanese. We currently live in Gilbert AZ.
In 1994 I began a unionizing effort at Triumph Twist Drill in Rhinelander, WI. I was elected to be the 1st President of USWA, Local 9408. Union's, being the 1st President of Local 9408. I served as President of VVA ( Vietnam Veterans of America), Chapter 153 located in Blue Island, IL.
I collect anything sports related. My greatest sport memory was attended the Muhammad Ali vs.Leon Spinks Championship in New Orleans, LA. Bourbon Street was a far cry from the lifestyle of Orland Park.
Kurt Hacker and I attended Summer School together in 1966. We both needed the credit to graduate on time. The class was Social Studies, taught by Mrs.
O'Connor. Kurt dropped out of high school , early 1967 to join the US Marines. Kurt was killed in Vietnam, June 5, 1968, one day before Bobby Kennedy' assassination. I think of Kurt almost every day.
