Rebecca's Story
Life
I recently tied the knot in July of 2007. My husband and I are enjoying the newlywed life and couldn't be happier. The two of us currently reside in Maple Grove with my hearing dog.
I'm also working in an outstanding career, keeping busy volunteering my time for Hearing Service Dogs of Minnesota, and FINALLY graduated in 2006 from the U of MN with a M.Ed. degree in Special Education-Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
College
I knew I had really chosen a great major when I was selected for Stearns County Probation agency to complete my internship. What an awesome group of professors and classmates I encountered during the time I was at SCSU.
My pursue of an MEd. at the U of MN also allowed me to meet some fabulous classmates, and I'll never forget some of the most intriguing professors I met along the way.
Funny...when I look back on my life I was always told I was one of the "slow" ones in my class. It was when I was introduced to ASL that I realized I wasn't slow, I ...Expand for more
just missed a lot of information due to my hearing loss. I must have done something right since I graduated from both colleges with honors.
Workplace
I teach American Sign Langauge (ASL) full-time at Blaine High School and part-time at Cambridge Community College. During the summer months, I teach ASL to children ages 6-18 through Youth Academy at North Hennepin Community College.
GREAT NEWS... In 2003, I received the TOPs award from District 11, and in 2004 I received my second Golden Apple award from Cambridge for excellence in teaching. 2004 also brought a very special feature about me at Blaine in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. I'm having an awesome time in my career and couldn't be happier. During the 2005-2006 school year I also received 2 teacher awards from the VFW. A co-worker nomiated me for their outstanding teacher award and fortunately I won both the local and Minnesota awards. What a joy it's been teaching and making a difference in someone else's life.
