John's Story

Retired from the military, March 2002 Naval Submarine Mechanic, with several acclaims and awards for my work... Presently working in a safety & security supervisory capacity, at one of the major 5-star hotels in downtown San Diego... Presently pursuing an educational degree in creative arts, and plan to re-direct my career in that direction, while I am working on my writing...my first & foremost, true passion... If I'm not wearing away the lead in my pencil, writing whatever strikes my fancy, I am always creating or making something, be it practical or artistic (...woodworking, sculpting, painting, etc.) Still pretty much single, though it's not necessarily due to a lack of trying to find someone; I have been told, more than once, that a), like Monty Python, Guiness Stout and the writings of William Burroughs, I'm an 'acquired taste'; b), I'm way too independent and self-sufficient, and c), being the artistic and creative type, I'm 'a great person to have fun with, but (I'm) a dreamer' (...go figure, on that one; what's wrong with a dreamer...sigh!)... Just as I have been able to maintain my youthful looks, without really trying, my personality is also pretty youthful (...with a mindstay of about 20 to 25 years younger than my present age; attributed to an early induction into a disciplined military, with the Navy keeping my creative side pretty much tethered and restricted)...perhaps a little naive, at times; however, being an aspiring artist, that's where the magic lies, right?? One of my most favorite and devoted passions, is that of the movies...in particular, cult films, horror and fantasy films, old school ...Expand for more
martial arts film, and those great exploitation and grindhouse films of the '70's & '80's; I have an extensive and ever-growing film collection, numbering in a staggering 15,000 titles, and most assuredly have many films in my collection, unavailable anywhere... If I had to pick a character in the '80's film, "The Breakfast Club", which best exemplifies my nature and personality, while in high school, it would have to be a combination of the Anthony Michael Hall character, and the Ally Sheedy character...a 'twisted' brain, for lack of a better description...LOL!!! My most absolute favorite moment in high school, beside being the resident movie critic in the 'Panther's Tale', would most assuredly be my passionate and chilling reading/recitation of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven", during my junior year. I remember that the assignment was to pick a poem tro perform/recite...minimal 12 lines...and I chose "The Raven", with 127, count 'em, 127 lines. I recall, when I started the recitation, there were astonished 'giggles', after about 36 lines; the minimal laughter subsided, as everyone was transfixed and mesmerized (...heck, all I was concerned about, was getting through the recitation, without messing up, and was little concerned with my 'audience's reaction and astonishment). Finally, I remember the 15-20 seconds of silence, when I finished; you could hear a pin drop, and for a second, I thought that I'd perhaps forgotten something. You know, to this day, I still know that damn poem by heart, and can always 'bring down the house', when asked to perform it...LOL!!! (...to be continued, as I come up with more...Stay Tuned)
