John's Story

Life After graduating from Detroit Catholic Central HS in 1963, I attended Catholic U. in Washington, DC and got a BA in Physics; I also met Rosy, and we married in 1969. From college I entered the Marines in 1967, served as a HAWK missile and embarkation officer in California and Vietnam, and went on to graduate school at U. of Chicag0 to get a MA in Philosophy. I entered the Foreign Service in 1972, with postings to Izmir, Turkey, Washington, DC and Madrid, Spain. I worked as an analyst at the CIA from 1985 to 1989, then returned to the State Department as a foreign affairs officer in the Civil Service to work on UN agencies dealing with nuclear energy, environmental, economic and social affairs. Meanwhile, Rosy and I raised two sons, John and Mike, and a daughter, Dawn, who in turn produced our first two grandchildren, Aidan and Siena. John and his wife Brenna later adopted two little boys from Ethiopia, adding to the next generation of McGuinnesses. We're still living in the Washington, DC area. I retired from the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the end of 2009, and now teach Philosophy part-time at Northern Virginia Community College. Rosy is also retired from working, first with Fairfax County, then Loudon County, as an administrator for special education programs. She also teaches part-time at George Washington University in the graduate education program and works part-time as an at-home speech pa...Expand for more
thologist for clients recovering after hospitalization. Military I joined the Marine Reserve while in college, pending graduation and assignment to Officer Candidate School at Quantico in the fall of 1967. My father had served with the Marines during WW-II, landing on Guadalcanal as commander of an engineering company in the First Marine Division. From Quantico, after commissioning on Dec. 8, 1967, and attending The Basic School until May of 1968, I went to 29 Palms as a Firing Platoon Commander with a Hawk Missile Battery that was part of the Marine Air Reserve Missile Training Detachment (MARMTD). After Hawk missile school in El Paso, the 2nd LAAM Battalion returned from Vietnam and two batteries were based at 29 Palms, taking over the MARMTD facilities. I subsequently went to Embarkation Officers School at Coronado, Calif. and joined the S-4 shop under Capt. Ashworth as the assistant battalion logistics officer, later taking over the shop when Capt. Ashworth left active duty. I remember working with Cpl. Heiser, Cpl. McKinney, and other Marines in the S-4 shop. Harry Roberts, Mike Perry and others were fellow officers in the battalion. I got married during this time and had my first child, Dawn Maureen, now a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army. Eventually I was sent to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in DaNang where I worked as the Materiel Officer in the Headquarters Squadron. I left Vietnam and went off active duty in November 1970.
