Lesley-Diann's Story

Life At age thirty-eight, I have more faith, energy, happiness, and hope than ever! Family is extremely important to me! I spend valuable time with my parents, sisters, brother, nieces and nephews. I'm the proud aunt of eight. Let me share a quick family story...My dad needed a Kidney about six years ago. My brother gave him one of his! It lasted for three years. My dad needed another one. My sister gave him one of hers! It's working...but if he should ever need another...I'm a match! It's his! This is what I mean about family, love, and God!!! After spending sixteen wonderful years in the classroom as a teacher and literacy coach in New York City Pubic Schools, I am now an assistant principal in Hoboken, New Jersey. I'm excited about this new challenge in my life! I strongly believe we're here to give back to others and help them in their development. Furthering my own education continues to be important. After graduating from Virginia Union University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism, I began teaching while looking for work as a television news reporter. A sorority sister (Delta Sigma Theta) suggested that I try substitute teaching. Well...that's all it took. I fell in love with teaching which I believe is my gift from God. After teaching for several years, I obtained a Master of Science Degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Bank Street College of Education. I began work as a teacher in a brand new school in Bed-Stuy with a fantastic group of educators! Starting a school from the ground up is the way to go if you ever have the chance! Over the course of sixteen years, I've taught in several marvelous public schools with outstanding children! While teaching, I still followed my passion of news reporting and was active in news organizations (NABJ...) by attending conventions and networking. I freelanced in print journalism for a newspaper in New York as a reporter and photog...Expand for more
rapher. My favorite shot is the one I took of Hillary Rodham Clinton which made the front page! Photography is another gift I have by way of my grandfather and uncle who were outstanding photographers from the blue grass state of Kentucky. I always like to tell folks, "I may be a born New Yorker and I love it, but I have Kentucky roots and I'm proud of it!" :) I also became a television news reporter. Yep- I researched, reported, wrote, edited, produced, and delivered my stories on air for the evening and morning news. I even won an award for a story I did! Those journalism courses at VUU certainly paid off! It was important for me to achieve all of my professional goals so that I wouldn't have regrets later on in life. I continued to focus on my professional goals as an educator while simultaneously doing work in journalism. I obtained my Administrative and Supervisory License in Schools and will graduate from City College next year with a Master's degree. In the next 5-10 years, I will start my own school! I just graduated from Columbia University, Teachers College with an Advanced Master of Education Degree in Curriculum and Teaching. I have oustanding support of family members who encourage me to continue striving for excellence. In 2000, Nightline with Ted Koppell did a six-part documentary on my life as a classroom teacher titled, "Master Teacher." That was certainly another blessing! I am a Christian and I attend a wonderful Bible Study during the week as well as Sunday service in my dad's church in which he is still pastoring in his 43rd year! I'm single and hope to marry one day and have children. I have terrific friends and love entertaining! Each winter I host my annual "Winter Tea for Ladies." My closest girlfriends come over for tea, scones and other edible delights. My fifth one is this coming winter. I love traveling abroad. France is one of the places I love visiting the most. My life is amazing!
