Roy's Story
Life
Life is pretty good. I'm in Texarkana again...22 years after I said I was never coming back...but it's actually good to be home. I've got a little girl and I want her to be able to see me when she wants to and not have to travel to do it. Plus I'm getting tired of being in places that were not safe places to live like New Orleans. Delores is doing great...living in the DFW area in a new house and making a ton of money, so life is the best that it can be.
School
I had a pretty strange time in high school because I was so focused on getting out I did not really take time to get to know more people than what I did. I had my friends and people I associated with, but I did not value those things as much has I did after I left and went to college. I think that was my only regret about high school. Oh, yea...I wish that I had cared more about my grades as a freshman and a sophomore. If I had then I could have gotten a scholarship or something to pay for college.
College
I loved Grambling and it will always be a defining part of the person I am today. I learned so much about life and how to not quit when things get tough. It was not easy because I had to pay for it out of my pocket, but I did something that no other person in my immediate family had done which was graduate from college. My brother told me, " Roy, you just don't know what this means to this family that you have graduated from college." I knew what he meant because he had tried to go to college, but did not have the money to complete his degree as did my oldest brother. I, along with Delores, gave them some...Expand for more
thing to be very proud of.
Workplace
My worklife has been a varied and rewarding. I worked a dishwasher for Kings Row Inn when I was still in high school, worked for Dominio's Pizza when came back home after a year at Grambling. I then worked for AutoShack, later renamed AutoZone as a Salesman, with the late Howard Jones. I moved up to parts sales manager and transfered to West Monroe, LA. I worked for AutoZone until I joined the United States Coast Guard. I worked as a recruiter/campus liason for the Coast Guard until I graduated. I then went to Officer Candidate School and worked as a Marine Safety Officer in Morgan City , LA from 1993-1996, then I transfered to New Orleans and was there for two years then I left because I didn't want to have a career in Marine Safety my entire time in the Coast Guard. So, I left and got a with Kraft Foods as a Team Resource(aka Production Supervisor). I did that for a year and a half and decided I would be happier doing something that I wanted to do in life instead of just getting a check every two weeks. So I resigned and took the money I had saved and what was in my 401k and moved back to Texarkana and got a job working a substitute teacher, then teacher's aide and that translated into what I am doing now working as an In School Suspension teacher at the elementary campus. It is good to be home and in a place that allows me to share my story with children, so that they realize that it does not matter where you live our how much money you have..what matters is the drive to be the best that you can be in this world, country, state and city.
