Robert's Story

Life News: Dec2007: Soon be going home after 60 days on the M/V (Motor Vessel) Ocean Pioneer. The 205ft ship is contracted out to the DMT dive company. The food is so bad here the company gives me $25 more per day. Got my shipping license upgraded, however still waiting for the USCG to send it to me. I'll be clearing over $100K this year for about 9 months of work (mostly 12 hr days). Sep2007: Getting off the R/V (Research Vessel) Davidson after 85 days of fun at sea in Alaska. Going back up to Maine for a few weeks to visit folks in Oakland. Plan on taking advanced fire fighting course in Baltimore, MD in Oct2007 so I can upgrade my shipping license - better license, more $ - ya know how it goes. Jan2007: Moved into new house near Charlotte, NC. (wife moved in for me because I was working in New Orleans at the time). Got married to a northern Virginia girl June 2002 on my birthday (we have 3 step kids and 2 Maltese dogs). Future aspirations: To become a Chief Engineer (work as a First Assistant Engineer now - almost there!!) and have some kids of my own. Quote: "I may not be like other people, but at least I am different" School There were a lot of girls I had crushes on. No names (sorry). Mr. Nelson inspired me the most. If I knew what I knew now, I would definately go back in time to high school and take over. I actually had more fun in college. The 1988 Band Trip was my craziest memory. Yes, I was hammered from drinking Colt-45 with Gus, Bret and that other fellow. College Maine Maritime Academy for 5 years for a B.S. in Marine Systems Engineering 92-97. Graduated May 97 (2.8 GPA with 196 credits). Whew!!! Touro University International for 2 years for a Maste...Expand for more
r's in Information Technology Management. Graduated March 2005 (3.9 GPA with 44 credits). Workplace Worked in the Navy as a commissioned officer. Also worked as a part time auto mechanic and gov't security guard on the side while still doing the Navy thing from 8am-4pm. Got out of Navy Feb 06 and now work as a First Assistant Engineer (1AE). A 1AE as a highly paid marine engineer that works onboard a ship. I basically keep the ship running. For example I repair refrigeration systems, engines, sewage systems, electrical equipment, fill tanks and keep track of all fresh water, ballast water, fuel and oil kept onboard the ship. I also do administrative work also like ordering parts and tools. If I choose to work all year I would make $120K+, however I choose to work 4 months on and two off, or 8 months on and 4 months off. Remember, I don't go home for 4 months at a time. Military Entered the Military as a reservist of NROTC in 1992. Became a commissioned officer in 1997 out of Maine Maritime Academy.
