Lori's Story

Richard Woods '81 and I met in 1986. He said he remembered me in school and thought I was cute but never had the nerve to ask me out. How sweet is that?! We were married June 12, 1993. We have lived about three miles from Southern Cayuga since 1988, purchasing our own plot of land in 1995 and have built it up from a field to a nice yard with trees, flowers and a vegetable garden. In 2010 we put in a new home. I've been an Administrative Assistant at Cornell University since November of 2002. In 2006 I became the Administrative Assistant for the Institute for Resource Information Sciences in the Dept of Soil & Crop Sciences in the College of Ag & Life Sciences. I designed a logo for Hazard Library's Southern Cayuga Community Read program and had created posters for a few years for the annual King Ferry Wheat Harvest Festival, I love nature photography and have sold my work to individuals. You may also see my work on display at the Syracuse office of Empire State College, and my photos have been used in various calendars and in Life in the Finger Lakes magazine. In 2008, I earned my BA through Empire State College. My work has been in several exhibits at ESC's Central Arts Gallery. ESC celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2011 and as part of their "40 at 40" celebration, they asked me to be one of the featured 40 alumni at the open house. I was very excited and honored to be asked. When I'm not working, I enjoy writing pysanky (Ukrainian art of waxing and dying eggs), wood carving, and nature photography. I enjoy reading, working in my gardens, hanging out on our patio with friends and family, sitting by the fire pit on peaceful evenings, listening to live music at local wineries, watching movies; especially comedies, and helping out in the community when I can. In 2019 was invited back by Empire State College to create my own exhibit of my pysanky eggs. Opening night was schedule for March 19th, 2020 (first day of spring), but due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the opening date was postponed. Sadly, the college decided to stay closed for the remainder of 2020 and in mid-November I dismantled my exhibit. I would love to hear from any classmates from Southern Cayuga especially from 1978-1985. I am on Facebook, just look under my name as it's typed above as you're not allowed to put web addresses here. happy to take any updated info you'd like to give so we can keep current on everyone's whereabouts. In 2012 we had an '80's Decade Reunion' for the first time. It was a pretty good turnout, especially for a first try. I hope they plan to do it again. In 2015 we celebrated our 30th reunion. We did the usual Friday night casual meet. Saturday night was a catered dinner at the Apple Station Winery and Sunday, a low-key picnic at my place. It was a gorgeous weekend; we had a great turnout, and everyone looked fabulous. So glad to have been part of it all. In 2017 I hosted a "We're 50!" gathering at my place. My friends in the band, Lucey's Hooch, played their last gig on our patio. It was a small, but really fun turnout. In 2018 Jim Van Arsdale and his co-musician friend, Connie Patti did us the honor to play on our patio. Another small turnout, but a lovely afternoon. Hoping to get a couple more friends to play on the patio. Who knows, maybe it will become a thing! :-) The day before Thanksgiving, 2019 I had my right hip replaced. I had been in pain for over 10 years, ending in bone-on-bone and it had become quite debilitating. I am so very thankful to the surgeon that took my case as I had been to a few over the years and none of them would help me. This one gave me my life back, and I am forever grateful for that. My husband and I became members of the Simply Allis: Allis-Chalmers Collectors of New York in 2009, I became the newsletter editor in 2013 and the president in 2018. I remain the newsletter editor and stepped down as president in 2022. During the pandemic we were lucky to have the Delta Mike Shaw Band come play on our patio while everyone sat out on the lawn and enjoyed the gorgeous day. It was really nice to have everyone together outside. About a month later Dave McKeon and his wife, Mary, who are the founding members of the bluegrass band, Moonshine Falls, played on our patio as well. It was certainly a really nice way to make some great memories during such a trying time in world history. 2020 marked our 35th reunion. I would have loved to have had a small get-together, but due to a low response (and pandemic), it didn't happen. 2023, I had my pysanky eggs on display at the Genoa Historical Association Museum in King Ferry for the Easter season through May 31st. I was very pleased that they were excited to have them on display along with a wonderful Easter bonnet collection.
