Matthew's Story
Life
After graduating from the University of Rochester in 1955, I taught high school and college for three or four years, with graduate school at the University of Chicago intertwined. Realizing that I didn't like teaching but did enjoy work at Chicago as a library assistant, I applied in 1962 for a job at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., and was accepted. That was the beginning of a fantastic and enjoyable 35-year career as an LC librarian. I retired in 1997 as the library's senior rare book cataloger.
In my early days working at LC on Capitol Hill and living in Maryland, I travelled a lot in Europe on one of those Eurail passes they used to sell. I met a Danish girl in Aalborg, Denmark, and a couple of years later imported her to Maryland and married her. We have four grown daughters, six grandchildren, and a couple of great-grandchildren!

and I moved back to Rochester to renew my association with Seabreeze Park and to continue my hobby, which is band organs (carousel organs), their operation, music, and history (see my Wurlitzer website).
The move back to Rochester turns out to be a mixed bag. Rochester changed, mostly for the worst, while I was away, and I must have been changed too by Washington life, although I only realize that now. The weather is better in the D.C. area and so is the economic and political climate. Growing up here, I never realized how conservative upstate New York is. But we both love our old 1930 house in Irondequoit, our neighbors are wonderful, and there are no traffic jams. But come winter, my wife always wants to move to Utah on the edge of the desert, where my brother and his wife live.
It has been quite a life. I hope it isn't quite over (although it is winding down *sigh*)
