Renee's Story

Not many people knew that I have a rare nerological disorder called Mobius Syndrome. I can't smile or close my lips together. Only 250 people in the world had it when I was growing up but now there's about 1-2000 cases worldwide. I know a lot of people thought I was retarded and didn't really have a problem letting me know their feelings regarding this. As a result I was dismissed and ignored a lot. Why waste your time, right? That's about how I feel about many of my ":classmates." It shouldn't come as a surprise that I probably won't show up at any reunions anytime soon. I've found that the people that ignored me and treated me like crap aren't people I want to associate myself with anyway. My junior year of HS I developed arthritis in my feet. One of the characteristics of Moebius can be clubbed feet, which I was born with. I had already 4 surgeries on my feet before kindergarten. Before I even hit 25 I would have 8 more surgeries. As a result I am now permanently disabled. I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Admin from National College in 1994. Due to my disabilities I was never able to really get a decent job and now I, unfortunately, still live at home. I really don't think anyone ever knew me in school or wanted to know me. But it's all good. I didn't want to know any of you either, seeing as how most of you shunned me and treated me like utter crap most of my school experience. If I could do it over now I wouldn't have sat back and took any of it. Hind site is 20/20 isn't it?? Some of my current hobbies are playing guitar and doing amateur graphics via Pain Shop Pro on the computer. I don't have any kids nor do I want any. The love o...Expand for more
f my life is my dog Odie. Oh, don't get me wrong. I have had quite a few relationships but probably like many of you all, never quite found the right one. I love the blues and yes, I still love the Bee Gees. I also love flowers and gardening. On occasion I love to go to concerts, when I can afford to that is. If anyone reading this has any questions, just ask. I was ignored enough in school. Maybe y'all have grown up a little and have gotten past that "judge people who look a little different" crap. I know I have. There hasn't been any happy endings here for me. For one thing, my life isn't over. God knows I've had enough challenges to deal with but that has only taught me not to give up. Sometimes in life you have to rethink your strategy. You have to accept that life is not a constant thing and that it can change in a heartbeat. Learn to go with the flow and don't dwell too much on "what could have been." It's a waste of time. You can't change the past and you have no control over the future. However, your actions and thoughts in the present do have a hand in the future. All of this is what I have had to learn and accept since May 1987, when I graduated from Widefield High School. I know it sounds like I have a serious chip on my shoulder and I guess I do. But I have been deeply, deeply hurt by a lot of you. The best revenge for me is knowing that not very many of you turned out any better than I did. Of course, none of you have had the challenges I have had either. Would I intentionally be rude to anyone? I should be. Throw it back at y'all. But I won't and I also won't put up with rude or insensitive people anymore. I'm too old for that nonsense.
