Jay's Story

After high school I went to Gordon. College just didnt fit with me. Boring stuff over and over again so I only dabbled in it. I joined the Air Guard in October of 1984 and left for basic training in February 1985. I wanted to do something like communications or something but I am color blind. I didnt even know! Anyway I failed all those color tests so I had to do something else. So I became an Engineer. Cool career field back then. I learned construction engineering, drafting, and survey. I felt that would give me three things to get a job in when I got out. And I was right. I got hired on by Georgia Power in 1986 at Plant Scherer. But I didnt want to just hang around here. I wanted something bigger. So I took the nuclear power tests and passed them and transfered to Plant Hatch in Vidalia, GA. I actually met my future wife the weekend before I left for Hatch while in Atlanta. We kept up a long distance relationship until she graduated nursing school at Georgia State University in Atlanta. I asked her to marry me on the same spot we met one year later. Romatic or what? We decided that Georgia Power was a big company and I could transfer to Atlanta and we could marry there. She was a city girl at that time and was just starting out nursing at Egleston Children's Hospital. So I transfered to downtown Atlanta in the mapping section. This leveraged the survey part of my military service. After a short time I transfered to the Engineering section. I drafted and did engineering work so that leveraged the other two parts of my Air Force work. So I chose wisely...<GRIN> Kathie and I married in October 1988 in Forest Park and we moved to Stone Mountain where we had our first child, Ben. In 1991 we had our second son, Erik. From there we bought our first house in 1991 in Lithonia and moved. Unfortunately during the downsizing of 1993 I was laid off from Georgia Power. No good reason, they were just cutting people. I still harbor resentment at that company for their poor choice. I was out of work for 8 months before I got a job at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta. I joined Georgia Baptist in the Information Systems department as a microsystems support analyst. Remember back in 1993 computers were still just in their infancy relatively speaking. We had big iron IBM mainframes but only about 100 PCs. From 1993 until 1996 I personally installed over 800 PCs at GBH. I fixed everything from IBM PC JRs...Expand for more
to early 486 machines. Supported anything that wasnt on the mainframe. Well the world changes as you know and in 1994 we had our third son Jacob. Money was tight as I was not making as much as I was at Georgia Power. Being the young new guy, I got paid the lowest. But I worked hard and proved myself and I was promoted often and quickly. Finally I was in charge of the MicroSystems Support Team in 1995 as its lead. We had our fourth and final child, a girl finally, Leah in 1996 during the Olympics. I got to quit making babies..<GRIN> In 1996 I was asked to move to the new Applications Support team and form the core support of the new desktop applications coming into GBH. Big Iron IBM was losing market share and desktop PCs and networking was taking over. From there I became the senior team member and then in 2000 became the Lead. In 1998 Kathie and I decided that we had had enough of Atlanta living and we moved back to Forsyth. I still work in downtown Atlanta and drive that 1+ hours to and from work, but the pay is good now. And my kids are happy going to Mary Persons. Never thought I would have children at MP... Ben graduated MP in 2008 as an honor graduate and all that snaz like his Dad. <GRIN> He lettered in cross country. He currently is attending Mercer University in Macon on a Full Scholarship. Erik is currently a senior at MP and is the captain of the varsity soccer team as a 4 year letterman. He is a solid A/B student. He was recruited by several colleges and universities around the area. He signed on with Delta State University in Mississippi after they offered him almost a full scholarship. Jacob is a freshman at MP and also a soccer player. Jacob made the MP Varsity squad as a freshman just like is older brother. In fact he is Erik's sub on the team. He too is an A/B student. MP soccer as of 17 Feb is 3 wins with 1 losses. Leah is a 7th grader and loves her big brothers except when the boyfriends start calling. Any boyfriends will have to get through all of them, plus their friends, and THEN meet me in the gun room to take her on a date. Only one boy so far has been up to the task..<GRIN> She too is an A/B student but should be an A but does too much talking like a girl...haha. She made the C Team soccer program and their games start at the end of Feb 2009. Anyway, my life in a nutshell. Looking forward to seeing all you guys at the reunion. Always a pleasure, Jay Haygood
