Joseph's Story

Life I am happily married, to a wonderful woman that I met in college (just celebrated our 16th anniversary). We have lived and travelled around the world (Afica, Asia, Europe)...only have 3 continents left to see. In the course of my travels, my attitudes and opinions have changed drastically. For example, I no longer have road rage :) though I wonder if that is one of those things like alcoholism where if you are once an alcholic you are always an alcholic: once a road-rager, always a road-rager...who knows? My wife and I now live in Vienna, Austria and are coming to the end of our assignment here, so who knows what's next? Lima? Llome? Oagadugu? or lovely Stockholm? Life has been pretty rewarding even with its sad moments, but some of the more exciting things I've done: I've ridden elephants, trekked in tiger country (even photographed one), dived in Thailand, won a regatta in Norway, and rode a luge down the alps. I've learned to speak norwegian and very bad german :) But out of all of this, the one important lesson that I've learned is that life is so very short, and there is an entire planet out there to enjoy. I don't get hung up on the small things; I won't waste my time dwelling on the shortcomings of others, or myself for that matter. I just move along and try to make the most of the hand that I'm dealt in any situation. (the photo btw is me with Mark Cowles' kid lol) College After spending way too much time at UofC Boulder, I went and did the tour d'force and got my masters in Hungary. Didn't do anything remotely related to that degree, but am now working on a second masters in International Business Admistration. Should be done in 2 ye...Expand for more
ars and then hope to sign on with an European company and permanently move to Norway, or Austria...or maybe Sweden...or Czech...or.... On the other hand might ditch Europe for South America...lot of balls in the air and irons in the fire, but I'm easy and not concerned. :) Workplace Well,I finally decided that I needed to graduate, so I did. Then I thought I ought to get a masters and doctorate and teach at the college level. I got the masters and decided I had had enough of school so I went into the work force. I worked in the wine industry for 5 years, importing and distributing wine, beer and spirits. But I decided that the importation aspect was what I really loved and landed a job with my dream company, importing everything under the sun; from animal bits and pieces to russian rocket motors. I ended up hating my dream company, lol, and in the meantime my wife joined the foreign service. So abroad we went. First to India for 2 years, then back to D.C. Then to Norway for 2 years, then back to D.C. And now we are happily ensconced in vienna and never want to leave...life is funny. I have done all kinds of crazy work in the past 7 years from stopping child trafficking/smuggling rings to running a private company (that was a lot of fun :)) But the most rewarding has been helping Americans in trouble abroad, and getting them safely back to the good ol' US of A. The state department thing has been pretty good; the travel and especially the housing (lived across from the royal palace in Norway in palatial trappings) but the novelty is wearing off and am starting to have the feeling that life might be a little more rewarding on the private side of things.
