Allan's Story

Aloha classmates! 1978: Graduated, messed around coaching baseball for the summer, then became a hobo and worked series of manual labor jobs... Spring 79: Started at U of O. Fall 79: Left U of O to become ski bum in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Summer 1980: Entered U of Colorado, Boulder. 1981: Went to edge of Blackfoot Reservation, Cut Bank Montana, and worked on the oil rigs. Left with a fat wad of cash and a '62 Ford and drove through the American west, climbing in the Tetons and rafting the Grand Canyon until I made it back to Boulder in Fall of 82. Sold the car and spent the money on tuition and 2 Allman Brothers tickets and went back to school. 82-88: Worked and scrounged my way through school on (roughly) the every-other-year plan, finished spring 88 in Organismic Biology. Jobs were mostly seasonal, be it with the Forest Service (fighting fires and cruising timber), restaurant jobs in Boulder or Steamboat Springs, construction, whatever...One time I was able to work as the Assistant Climatologist at an Arctic and Alpine research station along the continental divide...loved it. Summer 88: While living in Boulder and working for the US Forest Service, came out off a bender and realized I had enlisted in the Navy effective Jan 89. Spent the fall in Yellowstone on the big fire of '88. 89: Went into the Navy, got sent to a battleship (USS Missouri) out of Long Beach California. Saw Korea, Mexico, and a lot of beaches. 90: Had a little trouble on the battleship, got sent to the Philippines. Had the time of my life until I got sent on a cruiser for the first Gulf War. March 91: Cruiser struck a mine, got sent back to the Philippines in time for the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. Sent back to the Gulf later that summer to ride a different cruiser, made three port calls in Australia, played rugby in Freemantle. Loved Hobart. Found out my girlfriend was pregnant. 92: Back to the Philippines, had a girl, got married to a gorgeous tropical girl. Caught the last plane out in November 92 as US Forces pulled out permanently. Reenlisted. 93: Went to forecasting school in Mississippi (that place blows). Had second daughter. Orders to southern Spain. Sobered up, worked my tail off and kept my head low, qualified as forecaster for Mediterranean, Balkans, and Baltic. Played a lot of softball, travelled to Portugal and Italy, got the weight lifting bug, had a son in 95. Reenlisted again in 96. Dec 96: Sent to a carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln out of Everett. REALLY worked my tail off there...saw the usual: Hong Kong, Singapore, Victoria BC, Australia and of course the Persian ...Expand for more
Gulf. Made it back to Oregon summer of '99 but didn't run into anyone, didn't look anyone up. Sorry that was stupid. Oct 1999: Sent to Pt. Mugu California, hung out at Venice Beach and Santa Monica and Dodger Stadium. Dude, it was so gnarly. 2002: Selected for officer and sent to Florida for manners training and a lobotamy. 2003: Sent to Japan to route ships in 7th and 5th fleets. Travelled all over Japan, went back to college for second BA. Humanities this time, good ol' lit and history. Ate a lot of fish, did a lot of climbing and a little surfing. Learned the lingo pretty well but still can't read the stuff. 2005: Went back to Middle East for 4th time, this time on the ground rather than ship. Worked on both the Afghan and Iraq wars from the safety and comfort of a control room. 2006: Came back to Japan to ride ships and work periodically at the DMZ in Korea. Wife left, kids stayed. Good deal. 2007: Sent to a different spot in Japan, just west of Tokyo, as officer in charge of 20-man detachment of weather forecasters. 2010: Transferred to Hawaii. Work at Pearl Harbor, bought a house, finished Master's degree in literature and philosophy, remarried, and settled in for the long haul. All three kids came with me, although the oldest left to go to college at Fordham in NYC. 2013: Promoted and exhiled to Norfolk VA, did oceanography and then a carrier tour. Got to drive an aircraft carrier. F-in A bubbha! 2017: By some sort of miracle or government screw up, got sent back to Hawaii to run a 15 man weather group. Home! Love it so much here. Both daughters are gone, one in NYC and the other in Virginia, and son isn't far behind. He wants to go back to Japan. I don't know as I'll ever get back to Oregon but I still realize few places are nicer than Oregon...you really are lucky--and wise--if you managed to stay there. 2019: Retired from Naval Service after 31 years, stayed here in Hawaii. One daughter is in Honolulu, another is in Bend, and son is in the Marine Corps. Got a weed card and worked at FedEx and swam in the ocean a lot for about a year, then turned in my card and grew up and went back to work in tropical cyclones at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Pearl Harbor. Back to school in GIS and Operational Meteorology too. Still don't know what I wanna be when I grow up but I love Iceman breathing and hiking and kettlebells and studying stuff. Think of Springfield sometimes, and fondly. That was a great place to be from. "Sometimes the lights are all shining on me, other times I can barely see...lately it occurs to me, what a long, strange trip it's been."
