Lisa Sabatino:

CLASS OF 1964
Waterford, WI

Lisa's Story

Hello to anyone who's interested. My husband and I just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. Two years ago we moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Owensboro, Kentucky. I grew up in snow in southeastern Wisconsin, tolerated it for 38 years in northeastern Ohio and told my husband I wasn't going to be a senior citizen in the snow. I have a good friend (more like a little sister) who lives about 30 miles north of here. She's close but not too close. I'm married to the nicest guy in the world. He's originally from Sicily. Came here in 1960. Had to learn English and now he knows it better than most Americans, including me. After all the hoo-haw of being harassed for my Sicilian heritage while growing up, I married into a family who thinks Italians are the "master race". It was quite an adjustment in attitude for me. For those of you who were at WHS from 1957-64, you are aware I had two brothers attending there. Tony should have graduated in 1960, Al graduated in 1962. Tony quit high school after his junior year and joined the Navy. When he was discharged December 1962 he wanted to get his diploma so he could be a plumber like my dad. He came back to WHS for the Class of '63's final semester. He got out of school in January 1964 but received his diploma with me in June. In July 2010, Tony died from complications with COPD and diabetes. My chosen vocation was secretarial. I loved being a secretary. Had some wonderful jobs and wonderful bosses. Before I married and moved to Cleveland, I worked for The Journal Company in their national ad department. Then, in Cleveland, I worked for GE Lighting (where we used to make the light bulbs and stuff) and The Cleveland Orchestra. Worki...Expand for more
ng for the Orchestra was very interesting--I love classical music and TCO is world class. I worked in their marketing and pr department. Those were my full-time jobs in Cleveland. The rest of the time I worked for temp agencies. I never had children but have many honorary kids. All ages, all colors. I write poetry. I have a website for customized poetry. I love to sing. I've recorded music. I wrote and recorded a song as well. In 1968 I became a born-again Christian. Best decision I ever made. I'm pro-life, pro-Israel, anti-gun control (even though I hate guns with a passion!). I'm an avid animal lover so much so that in 1990 I became a vegetarian. "Nothing that had a mother." I had wanted to become an airline stewardess (I guess they call them flight attendants now). My oldest brother Tom put the kibosh to that. I thought about joining the women's Navy, too. Tom nixed that as well. At the time, I didn't appreciate his intervention but he probably did me a favor. I could never come up with anything worth four years of college so I went to work after high school graduation. Then, in 1971, I got married and moved to Cleveland, Ohio. I love going back to our class reunions. One of our classmates asked me why, since I got picked on so much in school. I told her that sometimes you have to forgive people. Sometimes people do things in ignorance. And I like going back to see everyone, to let them know I turned out ok in spite of the malarkey. One last thought for those of you who don't believe Jesus is Who He said He is . . . ignoring Him is like ignoring the principle of gravity. Think about that. Besides that, why turn your back on Someone Who loves you?
