Roy's Story

For those tuning in from David Douglas H.S. I grew up on Division St. and 135th. Attended North, South and Earl Boyles Elementary Schools. My high school years were a mess '60-'61 David Douglas, '61-'62 Beaverton and Sunset, '62-'63 David Douglas and '63-'64 Sunset. In spite the best efforts of Guys like Mr. Walker I did graduate. Actually 4 times. Sunset '64, Lane C. C. '70 and U of O '72 and '76. I spent four years in the US Coast Guard '64-'68, four really great years. Too many stories to tell except that it gave me the spark I needed to go to college when I got out. I got married the same year which turned out to be one of my biggest mistakes. We had one son who has totally devoted himself to his mother which is probably a good thing. When it appeared I could no longer do any good we divorced after 42 years. It's been 5 years now and I think I have recovered. I have done just about everything I wanted to do in this lifetime, I taught Biology and Marine Biology for 26 years, coached wrestling for 20 tears, Did a little research getting my Masters Degree on the feeding habits of Pacific Salmonids. Got a grant from MJ Murdock Charitable Trust (You all remember who he was I hope) to work summers at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center in Beaverton. Yes, thats the same place on 185th that I made sure I ran past it when we were in HS. As for wrestling I was involved with many state champions, too many to enumerate finishing at Nerberg HS which as some of you know is a perenial power house. I got SCUBA certified in Seatle shortly after graduation in '64. While attending college and teaching in Lane County I was a diver (8 years) for the Lane County Sheriff, WSRU, that R is for recovery not rescue. In that time our team dove in nearly every bit of lake, creek, river and ocean in Lane County. From s...Expand for more
ea level to 5000' where our gear was horse packed in. While in the Coast Guard I was stationed at the end of pier 91 in Seattle for two years. At Port Angeles, some of the best diving in the Puget Sound, I had a short stay, they told me I wasn't going to play admiral. I finsihed my tour in Florence, Oregon. I caught more salmon than I can count, we always joked that if the game warden ever came over to us we would board him and find something we could write him up for. In Florence I got my first sail boat and sailing has been a part of my life until just recently. I had a 22 footer docked at Winchester Bay for many years, great salmon fishing. I am almost a life time Lutheran, short period of time in my younger years. My church is a big part of my life now, Monday I write the prayers for the next Sunday, Tuesday I head a prayer group, Wednesday I attend our Pastors Bible study, Every third Sunday I sing the litergy and assist the Pastor at the Altar, and most recently I was commissioned as a Stephens Minister and have spearheaded the beginning of our youth Sunday School. I am a past president of the church council and member of the council. I live in southern Nevada where I spend most of the summer in an RV park swimming pool close to where in live. Me and my Land Rover have been up and down many of the back roads here. I am a member of the largest Shooters resort (Front Sight Nevada) in the nation between where I live and Vegas. It is an amazing facility, I trained there last week for 5 days with 200 other members in hand gun defense and finished neccesary testing for a CCW for Nevada and Utah, I'm shooting better at 68 than I ever have, we went through 500 rounds in 5 days. I'm not completely out of the woods yet but I'm close to curing my arthritis which has had me down but not out for several years.
