Elizabeth's Story
Ah, girls, everything is fine, Thank God!
No Complaints! As you can see, I'm still very active with alumni work. I do this with CHS as well as with NYU.
I love volunteer work - it keeps me going. The important thing is to be connected and together..this internet thing is zee best thing ever, righhhttt?
Well, after HS, I went to NYU, majored in Politics and minored in Philosophy. I was pre=law, but Thank God, I didnt' go to law school after graduation. I got a job working for Mayor DInkins as a writer and researcher, and then stayed on for part of Giuliani's term, but they cleaned house and I went back to school to get a master's in public admin and mgt. Got another job and went to school part time. Since then, I've changed jobs every couple of years, and a few years back, I realized that writing and working with young people is my passion and path. I still have to pay bills, so I work in corporate america, thinking with each new job, that maybe "this is it," but it isn't!
On 9/11, I happened to be working on Wall and Water Sts. and I thought that was it for me. I couldn't believe it, and even tho what I went thru isn't much compared to what others went thru, it was enough for me becasue I thought I was going to die that day. I told God, "No, I'm too young. I still have so much to do." Glad He heard me! I ended up on a commuter boat and landed in Jersey. As I got off the boat, I watched the remaining tower collapse.
I learned a year later, that Yvonne Bonomo, from our Class, worked in that building. She was engaged. We lost our Yvonne.
Throughout that year, I had a hard time working and commuting to NY. I changed my hours to avoid rush hour, I stopped socializing, I didn't even attend important events in my friend's lives. I am lucky it took me a few months to get back to myself. I still read about people who are on meds, in therarpy, still trying to get over what happened. ...Expand for more
I made a slow move out of NYC, and believe me, I LUV NY, but I couldn't deal with another incident. So, they moved our offices midtown, but eating on the 26th fl cafeteria, surrounded by skyscrapers, didn't help at the time. I found a job in Rockland County, NY and eventually moved to Kearny in Northern NJ, where my best friends lived (I ended up at their home on 9/11). Funny thing is when I moved there after their bugging me, they bought a house in PA! But, 2 siblings stayed behind, so I wasn't alone. Then, I got a job in NJ and my parents moved here as well. It's still close to the city, Thank God!
The apt has a sweeping view of the NYC skyline and beyond. SO, i have my NY with me, day and night! I moved in with my parents because after my grandparent's death (11 mos apart and grdpa died on his 89th bday), mom's health was up and down, and being an only kid, I felt the need to be with them. MY dad turns 80 this year, so in a way, they both need me closer. And the apt is big enuff that we are at opposite ends and we can go without hearing or seeing each other when we "need" to! At least, I sleep better at night. We had alot of DRAMA with my grdparents - we dealt with issues that we shouldn't have been dealing with - esp. with "grandparents." But, we did what we had to do.
So, aside from this, I have remained active in community work and have done lots of different volunteer service work! It's what's gotten me and us thru life's curves.
For the most part though, life has been good. I can't complain - I am grateful for what I have.
One day, you guys should come over! It'll be fun!
Well, I had to type this all over again since it didn't save the first time...now, you're gonna get another "Announcement." Don't ya just luv hearing from me? Anyway, luv ya!
Oh, and you're not off the hook: RSVP and add me as your friend...please, pretty pleases???!?!?!?!??!!!!!
Luv ya'll,
La Loca Liz
