Kevin T's Story

Here's my bio for work and publications. It kind of tells what I've be up to. It's easier to clip & paste than to write something all over. Kevin T. Brady, Ph.D. founded and serves as President of the American Institute for History Education (AIHE) and is one of the leading history education specialist in the United States. AIHE directs and partners with over 60 U.S. DOE Teaching American History grant projects. Brady and AIHE publish substantive web resources such as Cicero: History Beyond the Textbook and NJAmistad.com, along with over 40 other web sites. The Institute publishes history and history education books and conducts teacher workshops and colloquia around the nation. Brady also serves as editor and project manager of the NJ Italian, Italian-American inclusion curriculum for the State of New Jersey, is the Vice President for Membership for the New Jersey Council for the Social Studies, and serves as Vice President of Franklin¿s Opus: the American Institute of Historians and History Educators. Early Life Brady was born at St. Agnes¿ Hospital in the South Philadelphia section of the Quaker City on July 14, 1960. His family soon moved across the Delaware River to the Oak Valley section of Deptford Township in South Jersey. He attended St Margaret¿s Catholic School and the Oak Valley Elementary School. Brady then attended Monongahela Jr. High School, Gloucester Catholic High School and graduated from Deptford High School in 1978. Not immediately going to college, Brady instead worked in the kitchen at the five-star Tall Pines Inn in the Sewell section of Deptford. He eventually rose from dishwasher to pantry chef, to sous chef, and then ultimately assistant head chef, where he ran the frontline. After a two year stint in the culinary fields, Brady ran the payroll at Bluebird Foods ham packing house in the food distribution center in South Philadelphia. Not happy with his college experience at Glassboro State College, Brady went to work in the marketing department at Engage-A-Car, Inc. and then sold insurance for Malloy-Bell Insurance in Voorhees New Jersey. From the time he left high school, Brady stayed involved in football. He served as a head coach for the Oak Valley Vikings 130lb. team of 14 and 15 year old boys and as an assistant coach for the 110lb team of 12 and 13 year old boys, As a Vikings coach, he went to the playoffs, won divisional titles or league championships every year except one. Brady also scouted for the NJ Group 3 State Champion Deptford High Football team and served as the President of the Oak Valley Football Association (the Vikings) for three years. The Vikings had won 12 league championships over 12 years at various levels of play. He also served as Oak Valley¿s league representative to the Eastern Midget Football Conference and was a founding member of the Atlantic Football League. In 1986, Brady entered the St. Pius X Seminary in Dalton, Pennsylvania for the Diocese of Camden, NJ and attended the University of Scranton. He graduated magna cum laude from Scranton in 1989 with a major in history and minors in theology and in philosophy. He won the Excellence in History award that year. Brady belonged to the Phi Alpha Theta (History Honor Society), Alpha Kappa Delta (International Sociological Society), and Alpha Sigma Lambda (National Honor Society for Continuing Adult Education). While in Scranton, Brady met his wife, Stephanie Ryan, from the East Mountain section of Scranton, while serving on his senior year apostolate at the Lackawanna County Emergency Shelter for Children at Loudesmont. After a long trip to the Mideast and Rome, Brady began to see Stephanie over the summer of 1989. He began a semester at Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, New York near Buffalo, but returned to Scranton to be near Stephanie. Once back in Scranton, Brady entered the University of Scranton graduate school and studied American History. Upon recommendations from his professor, Dr. Ray Champlain he left Scranton and immediately pursued his doctorate in history at Temple University. Brady moved to Philadelphia to study at Temple and began teaching 7th grade at St. Monica School. Kevin and Stephanie were wed in 1990 at the Immaculate Conception Church in the Hill Section of Scranton. Stephanie joined Kevin in their new home in the Girard Estates section of South Philadelphia. While taking graduate classes at Temple, Brady taught at the St. Monica School in South Philadelphia for three years. Each year he taught three 7th grade classes of American History, along with classes in Religion, Reading and Science. In 1993 the Brady¿s moved to Maple Shade, New Jersey while Kevin taught American History at Camden Catholic High School in Cherry Hill, NJ. As a teacher at Camden Catholic, Brady pursued and received his New Jersey Teaching certificate in Social Studies, along with writing his doctoral dissertation, The Fenians and the Faithful: The Irish Republican oBrotherhood and the Diocese of Philadelphia, 1859 to 1870. Tragically, in September 11, 1995, the Stony Run Apartments in Maple Shade caught fire and 44 units were destroyed, including Brady¿s. All of his dissertation research and writings were ruined. Brady had begun to teach U.S. History at Kingsway Regional High School in Woolwich Twp. NJ five days before the fire and the Brady¿s had discovered that Stephanie was pregnant with their first child. After the fire, Brady continued to research and rewrite his dissertation, along with teaching at Kingsway. He also coached the freshman girls¿ soccer team that year. The Brady¿s moved into a brand new home in Clayton, NJ in November 1999. On May 8, 1996 the Bradys¿ first daughter, Caitríona Mór was born in Voorhees, NJ. While at Kingsway, Brady also coached boys¿ freshman basketball and he planned, produced, and taught courses in many subject areas, including U. S. History, Western Civilization, World History, Ethnic Studies, Law, Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, and Philosophy. During those years, he also served as an adjunct professor at Camden County College and Cumber...Expand for more
land County College where he taught U.S. History, Western Civilization, and World History. He also helped generate the New Jersey Social Studies Curriculum Frameworks for the Core Content Standards and helped to produce, and edited the guidelines and the historical outline for the New Jersey Social Studies High School Proficiency Assessments and the Frameworks¿ historical outline. While at Temple, Brady had studied Irish and Irish-American History under Dr. Dennis Rubini. He also completed generalist studies in U.S Military History under Dr. Russell Weigley, American Social History under Dr. Kenneth Kusmer, and Modern European History under Dr. Frank Weber. He received his M.A. in January 1995 and after the devastating fire that had consumed most of his doctoral research and writing; Brady finally received his doctorate in history in January 1999. In September 1999, Brady moved from Kingsway to the nearby West Deptford High School where he taught U.S. History and World History. That very September, the Brady¿s welcomed their second daughter, Ciara Gael into their family. Brady also continued to teach at Camden County College, and served as an adjunct professor at Temple University, where he taught Irish History. He also served as a Director for the New Jersey Council for the Social Studies and performed professional development workshops for the New Jersey Department of Education. In June 2000, Brady moved his family to Northern Virginia and began his tenure as Vice President of Education Programs at the Bill of Rights Institute in Washington, DC. He authored and directed the production of the Bill of Rights and You: Teacher¿s Guide, co-author and instructional designer, and Citizenship and Character: Exploring Civic Values From the Founding to Today; along with numerous historical and educational articles, lessons, curricula, and newsletters, such as, "Abolitionists among the Founding Generation," Middle Level Learning; "Abolitionists Among the Founders" The Docket; ¿Teaching Character through the Founders,¿ Ourstory. He co-authored and edited, ¿Citizenship and Character¿ The Bill of Rights Institute¿s monthly citizenship lesson and activity newsletter and co-authored, The Bill of Rights Institute Newsletter. Brady also coordinated the content of the Institute¿s interactive educational website. Additionally, Dr. Brady designed and facilitated teacher seminars and teacher workshops across the nation. He created and ran the Bill of Rights Institute¿s Summer Institute for Teachers at George Mason University, School of Law. He continued as a Director for the New Jersey Council for the Social Studies, edited their newsletter and also sat on the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Council of History Education. In April 2002, Brady returned to South Jersey and moved his family to Woolwich Twp, NJ, where he had previously taught at Kingsway. He took a position as the Director of the Center for Strategic Urban Community Leadership¿s Institute for Best Practices and Innovations in Urban Education at Rutgers University, Camden. After a two week trip to South Africa to discuss education with South African teachers, principals and University of Port Elizabeth professors, Brady was asked by the Center¿s Director, Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago to serve as the Director of High School Operations at the Rutgers/LEAP Academy University High Charter School. At LEAP, Brady was able to cut discipline referrals by over 70% within six months, reduce the failure rate by 50% from the previous year in the first quarter and then another 50% by the third quarter. His LEAP students also increased their standardized test scores by 20% across the board from the previous year. These comparisons were with the same students, not contrasting one group of students with the following year¿s students. Brady attributed his tremendous success at LEAP to the ¿Broken Window Theory¿ where he and a loyal, competent cadre of teachers focused on the little things, so that the big things took care of themselves. The students developed a real pride in their behavior, their attitude, and in their studies. Unfortunately, the LEAP elementary school had not experienced the same success and the Head Mistress resigned prior to the end of the year. With a new administration, comes new appointments and since he did not possess the proper state certification, Brady had to look elsewhere for employment. Fortunately, he had seen the changes coming with a new administration and had founded AIHE. With AIHE Brady conducted teacher professional development workshops. He wrote assessment questions and answers for ETS in Princeton, NJ, wrote lessons for the Saint Charles Seminary website, Weblessons, and for the New Jersey State Department Italian, Italian-American inclusion curriculum for the State of New Jersey. Brady also conducted recruitment drives for the Woodland Country Day School in Bridgeton, NJ and the Bishop Guilfoyle Regional Catholic School in Carneys Point, NJ. During the 2004-2005 school year, Dr. Brady had served as an assistant professor of education at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ. Since 2004, Brady has run the American Institute for History Education which has grown for an office of one into two separate buildings in Swedesboro, NJ, housing a staff of over 30 employees. AIHE employs noted historians, history education specialists, technology experts, master teachers, professional editors, a marketing and sales team and competent support staff. AIHE also contracts over 100 university historians and over 70 history education specialists as adjuncts on various Liberty Fellowships around the country. AIHE is considered one of the top History Education Professional Development organizations in the nation. Brady¿s organization also produces state of the art web resources for history education, publications, videos, etc. Selected videos are available to the public, free of charge on the Internet at AIHE.TV, on the AIHE history education station at TeacherTube and on StudentTube. AIHE also conducts AP History training for High School teachers.
