Jean Whaley's Story
I was born and grew up in Valdosta, GA - the first girl in my family in over 50 years.
My parents moved to Charlotte, NC in 1970, just after I completed 10th grade, and I spent one year in private school there 1970-71 (Charlotte Country Day School) before moving on to Queens College and then transferring to Davidson, from which I graduated in 1975.
I went back to Valdosta in the summer of 1971 and Valdosta High School allowed me to enroll in summer school and graduate in August 1971. CCDS would not allow me to take a diploma after only one year of enr...Expand for more
ollment - but I'd already been accepted to Queens College after my junior year of high school.
I thank VHS for making it possible that to check the blank for "high school graduate" and put it on a resume - and that I've not had to spend the rest of my life explaining how you could do doctoral work without a high school diploma!
I am proud to have been a Wildcat twice in my life - first in Valdosta (the best high school football team in the US) and later at Davidson (the best college basketball team for a school its size in the US). I think it was fate.
