Delores's Story

Life after high school has had its up¿s and down¿s for me like most people. Fortunately the downs have been few. After leaving high school I took a job in the retail field with the JL Hudson department stores. This set me in motion for a very rewarding career. It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time. After working my way up through sales and store management, with the help of a very caring mentor I was able to gain access to the ¿Executive Training Program¿ With JL Hudson. Within a few years I was privileged to b appointed the position of Buyer. Becoming the first ¿Black Female Buyer¿ for the company. It was a wonderful job and afforded me the opportunity to travel and do many interesting things. I remained with Hudson¿s for 26 years until the store closed its doors. In 1982 I obtained a job as Purchasing Manager with the Inacomp Computer Centers in Troy Michigan. I stayed with that company for 5 years, leaving to take a job as an Account Executive with EDS (Electronic Data Systems) I retired from there in 1999. y I plan to hang up this shingle soon and just bask in the rays of ¿total retirement.¿ Bobby Wilson also a Miller alumni and I have been married for 50 years and we had two children together. My youngest Katherine who was a practicing Clinical Psychologist passed away in 2004. She was a very special young woman, who made quite an impact on many people due to her community involvement and volunteer work. Katherine had one daughter Sydney, who was born with Down syndrome. She proves to us daily that a disability should never be a hindrance to accomplish things you want to attain. My son, the oldest is my rock; he has been and continues to be my mainstay when sorrow has taken me through many peaks and valleys. I am very proud of both my kids. Bobby and I have 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. And we keep ourselves actively involved with their many endeavors. My ambition after leaving high school was to go to college and study journalism as a follow up to my writing days on the Trojan staff. Needless to say destiny does not always lead us down the path we envision for ourselves, but sometimes that can be a good thing. Life has been pretty gratifying, so I have no regrets.
