Beatrice's Story

Hello to everyone, I attended Edward Furman Elementary from 66-70. My Headstart Teacher is still around but retired Mrs. Virginia Cantu. She went on to teach at Kostoryz Elementary after Furman. I did some research on our wonderful school and was disappointed to find very little info. Alameda Oakes Nursing Center is currently in its place. My Mom is currently undergoing physical therapy there and it was interesting talking to some of the staff on it's history.It appears to be haunted by children who occupied the school at the time it was an orphanage run by nuns back in the 30's or so the story goes, there was a fire and it is said that there were no survivors. In the 20's it served as a World War II barracks temporarily. Rosalva Chavez was my 2nd Grade best friend, Selma Escobedo and Sulema Luna were my 3rd grade best friends and Rachel Yanez was my 4th Grade best friend. was showing and people were coming to pick up their kids to take them home. Furman was closed as a school after Celia. It stood up to the storm and lasted 10 more years.In the 80's, it's cafeteria served as CCISD special education and diagnostic services departments. This was the last active history for the school's building. As for me, I'm a CNA and continue to work in the medical field. I credit my teachers, Mrs.Cantu (Headstart), Mrs. Head (1st Grade), Miss Pellegrino (2nd Grade), Miss Sauvignet Mr. Palm, Mrs. Blackwood (3rd Grade),Mrs. King, and Mrs. Ogden (4th Grade). Sadly, My Favorite teacher Miss Sauvignet passed away due to pneumonia when I was in 4th Grade. I still go visit her at Seaside. I'm 46 now the memories of back then will stay with me.
