Leslie's Story

Here's what I sent to Sue in 2010, with some updating from 2014: I did go to college for four years in Oregon, went to UC Berkeley for library school and worked as a librarian for a number of years. I got married unsuccessfully once, for 2 years, and successfully after that -- 40 years, 2 children and no grandchildren yet. I've been in CA since I came here for grad school. Not where I planned to wind up, and I'm still very fond of Oregon, but luckily both my husband and I have relatives in Oregon and Washington so we've spent a lot of time up and down the coast over the years. The only time I've been back East since Christmas 1962 was the 2002 visit to Washington when I visited with Franny for a day and she drove me around to various places I wanted to see again, including a visit to SRS which was uncannily the same in spite of hosting a church-based school. Apparently they haven't had the funds to fix anything up. Unfortunately, they also haven't had the money to keep it up in some ways so it was quite shabby. When my husband and I moved from San Francisco to the suburbs and I had kids, I lost the pace in the library world which was just then converting to computerization, so I spent some time teaching in various capacities, mostly substituting, and then started to work for the League of Women Voters on a long-running ...Expand for more
newsletter project. I spent 19 years overall, 11 as editor, before deciding in 2006 that I was stale and needed a change. I got that in spades by going to work for a man who runs several small political organizations out of one office with (at the time) only one full-time assistant! After about 2 years I got a great offer to become a business manager for a nonprofit whose board I was on, 5 blocks from home (instead of 30 miles away). So I'm working half-time as a business manager and still doing bookkeeping for my other boss. If anyone had told me that I'd wind up doing finances I would have howled with laughter. Also funny -- thanks to the League of Women Voters, I've spent years on a voluntary county commission monitoring hazardous materials (I'm in a county with 4 refineries) -- I tell people that with 1 semester of high-school chemistry (remember Mrs Wimp?) and a degree in English Lit, I'm living proof that serving on the commission isn't just for engineers! Update: I retired in Fall 2012, went back on two nonprofit boards (League and the board of the local LGBT center) and took up genealogy. I'm also pretty involved in college alumni activities for my class, mostly online. My daughter is living at home and working at getting her own business profitable, my son is a sysadmin in San Francisco, living just behind us.
