Ken's Story

Wow...I guess the place to begin is where we all left off: graduation. I was already working full-time but moved out of my parents' home within a couple of weeks to conquer the world. I didn't immediately go to college...that would be years later. Independence was what I sought, never realizing how good I had it right where I was at. I broke up with my high school sweetheart Susie Vaughan, married the girl I dated just prior to her, Jo Ann Rackley. We ended a nice friendship by getting married but had a beautiful child who has since grown into an amazing young woman - thus, no regrets. I worked waaaay too much to make ends meet after the divorce but met my incredible wife, Cindi along the way. Things just got extremely better from there. We raised my stepson, Stephen (from her 1st marriage) and my daughter Jessi together and built a wonderful life. She somehow still puts up with me even today. I had lost my mother to cancer in 1990 but after my father passed away in 1999 I felt the need to do something different...go back and finish a goal in his honor...so I completed my business degree at Mercer University, summa cum laude. That opened up a lot of opportunities for me. I had already been working for Caraustar Industries for a number of years (since 1987) but my degree gave them incentive to push me into management. I ran the Doraville Recycling plant for them for about 6 years of the 20 I was there. Since 2007, I've worked for Reddy Ice Corp as an Area Risk Manager traveling around the country but rarely running into any "old friends" anymore. At the end of 2008, I was promoted to Senior Risk Manager for the company and seem to have less and less time to spend with who matters the most to me - my amazing granddaughter, Lillian Rose Ray (new pictures coming soon...Expand for more
to my photo album) ...but then again, if I was retired right now I STILL wouldn't have enough time to spend with her! Along the way, I spent some time on the Douglas County Planning & Zoning Board w/ Venetia (Rainwater) Lewallen's husband, Larry. I discovered a hidden treasure of former classmates either working directly for or contracting work with Caraustar (Steve + Lee Proctor, Joe Lockwood, etc) and the remaining coworkers seemed to all have kids that were going to school with mine. Those were good times. Now, I work too much...but I still enjoy my "free" time. I'm a season ticket holder for the Atlanta Thrashers (LOVE hockey), get to Falcons and Braves games w/ my kids as often as I can. I still love to cut up and joke...even when I'm the only one that thinks it's funny...but find myself much more introspective lately. I would LOVE to catch up with old friends...we're all busy but this (Class Mates) does give us a great chance to contact one another and eavesdrop as to how anyone willing to participate is doing. I hope everyone is encouraged to write about themselves, their lives, their families...let's fill in 30 years of "gaps" with a little info...it doesn't take that long. As sad as it is to think of our friends that have passed on, I'm proud of every one of us that has survived, and in our own way "thrived", for this long. I'd happily argue that no matter what your individual perception of what success is - family/offspring, material things, educational accomplishments, annual income, whatever - we ALL have a lot to be proud of and share with one another. I thank every one of you reading this for the fun moments we all shared in one another's life and wish you all well. Please contact me directly as often as you like. I'm planning on checking in often.
