Tom's Story

My wife Kelsey and I now live in the highlands of rural New Hampshire, along with lots of wildlife, including bears, moose, fisher cats, lynx, coyotes – well, you get the picture. We’ve lived here for 16 years but, having previously lived on the West Coast, the changes and accompanying culture shock were a bit of an adjustment initially – changes that have sometimes been both difficult and pleasant – like having to take our own garbage to the dump, shoveling 6 to 10 feet of snow and raking snow off our roof each winter, missing old friends, drinking water from a deep well that doesn’t taste like it came out of a Clorox bottle, breathing clean air instead of smog, experiencing very little crime, confronting wild animals that like to eat our cats and chickens, and watching a family of baby skunks (picture: bouncing white cotton balls) coming up to greet us when we come home, or a family of foxes that took up residence in our backyard one year. All said, we’re glad we moved here. We still miss our friends, but we’ve also made new friends. Michelle, 26, was valedictorian of her high-school graduating class and was captain of her cross-country team. She graduated from Emory University in the Class of 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology, where she was on full scholarship and spent her third summer in Italy. She also worked as a teacher at a school that helps children with autistic disorders. She completed her first semester in medical school with A’s and B’s, but decided to withdraw to raise a family. She has since become married to a young man who also graduated from Emory in 2014, and they gave birth to their first child in May 2017. Kirsten, 24, graduated from Emory University, as part of the Class of 2016, where she was also on full scholarship and earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and African Studies. She lived in Spain during the first half of 2015 as part of a student program through Emory, and during her third summer she studied in Scotland and England, as well as traveled through much of Europe. She was awarded third honors in her graduating high-school class, and served as a captain for both the cross-country team and the track team during her senior year. Additionally, she was named a Scholar-Athlete by the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association and the New Hampshire Athletic Directors Association. She was also chosen as one of five high-school student finalists from New England to present her research on the impact of food additives and dyes on the growth inhibition of E. coli (located in the human intestinal tract) at the Northern New England Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, and was later selected to present her...Expand for more
work at the national symposium in Washington, D.C., in May 2011. Currently, she is enrolled at Dallas Theological Seminary where she recently began coursework to complete a master’s degree in Christian Counseling. Daniel, 20, finished his 8th-grade year as the valedictorian of his graduating middle-school class, and later graduated from high school in May 2016 as a member of the National Honor Society. He was voted by his peers to be team captain of his high-school cross-country team as a junior, and later asked to return as a captain for his team during his senior year. He went on to compete in both the New Hampshire State Meet and, later, the Meet of Champions during his senior year. Additionally, he served as a team captain for track, and captain for the school band, competed in cross-country skiing, and was named a Scholar-Athlete by the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association and the New Hampshire Athletic Directors Association. Daniel also attained the highest rank in the Boy Scouts as an Eagle Scout – which typically about 4 percent of Scouts ever achieve – where he served as the Senior Patrol Leader of his troop for about a year and a half. And has he has now completed his second year as a member of the Corps of Cadets at Norwich University, the oldest private senior military college in the United States. During his first year, as part of Norwich's Regimental Band, Daniel marched in Presidential Inaugural Parade. This year, he marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City. This year, Daniel will hold the rank of Cadet Command Sergeant Major in the Corps of Cadets -- essentially the highest rank to which a junior can attain, and will be one of only three juniors to hold that rank this year. He is now under contract to be commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy upon graduation from Norwich. Kelsey and I have now been married for nearly 32 years and enjoy growing fruit trees and vegetables together on over two acres of land in a little valley at the base of the White Mountains. In addition to working at a local university admissions office, Kelsey enjoys raising our flock of chickens for eggs and served as the advancement chair of our local Boy Scout troop committee for several years. Tom has been a writer and editor for most of his life, though he has also worked in management for several large organizations and had a small computer consulting business on the side for a number of years. He also has contributed over 1,500 hours of volunteer service at our local hospital, and served during 2013-14 as the chairman of our local Boy Scout troop committee. He currently is writing a book and learning how to write screenplays.
