Aaron's Story

Life Well, I'm not one for these things but here goes... Spent four (plus another term) great years post-High School at the University of Michigan, earning a BSE in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force. My original plan was to serve four years and separate, but I've been having a great time ever since going on active duty! My first assignment was to Andrews AFB, MD (near Washington DC) in 1999, where I soon married the former Christy Jarrett of Northville, Michigan in 2000 (college sweethearts...we met sophomore year). I was fortunate to get the opportunity to deploy in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM soon after 11 Sep 01 (I still remember driving home that night and seeing the smoke rising from the Pentagon as I crossed the Woodrow Wilson Bridge b/t MD and VA)--if there's nothing else I do in the Air Force, that experience made it all worthwhile. I was able to take a 25-person civil engineer team with 30 hours notice overseas to build up an air base in Muscat, Oman and then took my team forward to do the same at a formerly classified site in Jacobabad, Pakistan. Upon returning from the deployment in February 2002, Christy and I soon left the DC area for the island of Guam in the Pacific (12 degrees north of the equa...Expand for more
tor 2/3 of the way to the Philippines b/t the Philippines and Hawaii) to serve as an engineer at Andersen AFB. It's in Guam where we caught the travel bug, visiting Japan, S. Korea, Hong Kong, China, Thailand (our best trip), Saipan, Australia, and New Zealand over two years. The island was a great tour, where we took up SCUBA diving and took as much advantage of we could of being paid to live on a tropical island! After Guam, we moved to England in 2004, where I worked at Royal Air Force Mildenhall, about 2 hrs north of London, again as a civil engineer. European travels took us to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, Canary Islands, Gibraltar, Italy, and Egypt. In May 2005, Christy and I had our first child, Aiden Aaron. In September 2007, we moved back to the States after 5+ years overseas, where I'm working on another postgrad degree, this time in National Security Studies (specializing in Southeast Asia), at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. We had our second child, Kinsley Anne, in January 2008. In September 2008, I should pin on Major (that's scary). I'm also projected to go up the road in Monterey to start a year-long language program at the Defense Language Institute, learning Thai. From there, who knows where we'll end up!
