Abigail's Story
After graduating from Radcliffe and getting married on the same evening, I earned an MEd from BU. I decided I did not like teaching while doing the student teaching phase of that program!, We moved to Los Angeles and I worked in Aerospace Engineering as a research engineer, and had two children. My husband earned a Doctorate at Cal Tech, and we then moved to Ann Arbor, MI, where he had accepted a Professorship at the U of Mich. I worked as a Research Physicist at the Radio Astronomy Lab, part of the Electrical Engineering department, while getting an MS in Physics. The kids attended the University School through the 6th grade, and then went to public school. Meantime, another son put in his appearance.
I transferred to the Electrical Engineering Department, where one of my responsibilities was to exam what happened to guided missiles on their descent, which developed into research on the upper atmosphere. This, in turn, sent me into developing a model of the Atmosphere of Mars, a...Expand for more
t the time the US sent our first unmanned research rocket to Mars.
By this time, I was a divorcee with three children, and I accepted a position as a Research Scientist at MIT Lincoln Lab in Lexington MA. As a native Bostonian, I was glad to be back in New England where no-one laughed at my "funny accent". My children went on to college and left to live their own lives. They are now scattered from Los Angeles to Minneapolis to Paris. I am retired, but now play the viola (which I started playing after I retired) with a local orchestra, and the clarinet ("ditto") with a concert band. From science to music- not a big transition. If Einstein could do it, why not I?
I also started ice-skating after my kids left home, and am now a Gold Level Ice Dancer. No jumps or spins, just Waltzes, Tangoes, Cha-chas and Foxtrots!
I live in an assisted living home, although I need no assistance, but I am planning for what the future may bring.
Best regards to all of you
