Adele's Story
I graduated from University of California at Santa Barbara, taught in the area for several years and then went into the Dep't of Defense school system, teaching 3 years in Germany and 2 years in Greece. I came home, went back to school for a year, and decided not to go back but to marry instead. After my husband finished grad school, we moved to Bakersfield where he was offered a job at a Cal State campus here.
At this point in my life, I am a retired first grade teacher who is married to college professor of music and department chair at Cal State University Bakersfield. He is a composer of both classical music and jazz and is a pianist (wwwdougdavismusic.net) We have two children who both live in the San Francisco area and, thankfully, are gainfully employed. At this point, we have no grandchildren. I am actively engaged in volunteer work of many sorts but mostly organizing and managing the volunteers for the music department concerts and festivals and local children's charities. That takes a large chunk out of the academic year. We live comfortably and have two dogs who are an integral part of our family. We travel whenever possible. Since I have been here for over 35 years, our lives are focused here in Bakersfield. Hope this fills in a few bare spots.....
I had always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right, as was I. It was a wonderful, fulfilling career that opened many doors for me.
Some of you may remember my brother, Norman. He passed away on Dec. 12, 2007 quite unexpectedly after returning from an after-dinner walk with his Janet. It was a horrible shock and brings home the adage, "Live every minute like it is your last."
Update: We now have a "grandpu...Expand for more
ppy" and my husband is going to premier a new composition played by our local symphony at the Feb. 6 concert. It was a very busy winter break......Happy New Year to all!
The concert took place and was well received. Glad that's behind us. Lots of stress....Now, on to organizing our 24th Bakersfield Jazz Festival, Mother's Day weekend, to raise $ for academic scholarships here at Cal State Bakersfield. (Bakersfieldjazz.com.
It is hard to believe that a whole year has passed but here we are at the 25th Bakersfield Jazz Festival. I have just finished pencilling in 250 volunteer workers and the festival begins Fri., May 6 and is over Sat., May 7 at about 10:30PM. If you are in the area, join us. All profits go to worthy students at Cal State University Bakersfield. The line up and everything you need to know is found at Bakersfieldjazz.com. Wonder if there will be a 26th?
Well, it's over, we gave away a lot of scholarship money, the weather was great, and we had a 5000+ audience. And much to our surprise, the CSUB President, Horace Mitchell, awarded Doug and me the coveted President's Award for 25 years of non-paid labor to raise money for those scholarships. Wow! Recognition from the top. First time anyone actually realized that Doug didn't do it alone. His partner was by his side doing her part, and a big part it is. #26 is still a question......We're not getting any younger and no one has stepped up to say they really want to take on the task.
We have finished #27 and now #28 is in question along with another question: Just how long can anyone be expected to do this without remuneration of some sort so that replacements can be found for us. We are both retired now and 27 years older than when we began. If you are interested, let me know.....
