Adele's Story

As some of you may remember, I was prego at graduation. In August 1983 I had my first daughter. She is now 27 and has a 7 year old son. In 1986 I had twin daughters. They are now 24. One 24 y/o has graduated college and will be getting married in May 2011. The other 24 y/o will graduate college within a year. My oldest is a huge success in the auto industry. I moved from Pennsylvania to Colorado and then on to Michigan in late 1987 and early 1988. My then-husband was in the auto business and we moved around quite often as he sought out better opportunities for advancement. Eventually we hit easy street and while our girls were in high school we were at our pinnacle as far as house and vehicles. All good things come to an end however and our marriage crumbled in 2007 after 22 years. A few months after our separation, with divorce pending, I was in a near fatal auto accident that required nearly a year total of surgeries, rehab and pt. 21+ broken bones, internal injuries, neck and back fractures, brain injury, an eye injury that required surgery to restore vision and I spent time in a wheel chair eventually learning to walk again. I had an excellent and supportive partner at that time who was a key component of my recovery. I moved to Florida with this person during part of my recovery since the warmth and humidity was helpful to the healing bones. The sun, salt and laid back lifestyle I was afforded during that time led me to a nearly 100% recovery...that and the hours of massage my partner invested in me. The divorce was put off during my rehab period and was final in May 2009. I moved back to Michigan in September 2009 and have been living with my oldest daughter. I am working on ME right now. I am currently holding down two jobs. One as a server at a sports bar and the second at Barnes & Noble where I am cross trained in several departments. I am also returning to school to get a certification in Medical Coding and at long last start a career. The support that I receive from my girls, my parents who are still alive but live in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, my small circle of trusted friends and my faith in GOD keeps me moving forward through all the storms of life. I have known darkness so I appreciate the light. Every day is a new beginning and another chance to learn and grow. Yesterday is the past and we can't do anything about it, tomorrow is a mystery and we have no control over it, but today is the present and IS a present...treat it as such and live in the moment. I'm thankful for what I have been through for it has made me who I am today and I'm thankful for what I have. That's about it................... :) Update...I am planning to return to Florida and reunite with the excellent partner I had during recovery from my accident. More to follow...catch me on FB. ***Update: February 2017 My oldest daughter is now married and her son is 13. My twins are also both married and they each have...Expand for more
a son...one is almost 3 and the other is almost 1. The daughter with the 3 y/o is pregnant with her second after a long struggle with infertility. The pregnancy is going well and the baby is strong...she is wrapping up her first trimester. This will be 4 grandbabies for me. I have settled in SW Florida living an hour south of Tampa. I have been here for almost 6 years now....happily single. Since moving here in 2011, I was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma and had a year of chemo after surgery. In 2012 I got the all clear. In 2015 it came back but was found early and surgery was the end all for that round. However, genetic testing revealed I have a gene mutation that will contribute to continued random recurrences. Catching it early each time is critical. Certainly gives me a whole new outlook on life. I got hired by Starbucks when I moved here in April 2011 and have been with them ever since. Thanks to the college achievement plan, they are putting me through Arizona State University (online-completely paid) where I am working towards my degree to be a Lifestyle Health Coach. I will graduate at some point next year, 2018, if I stay on track. Life does have it's complications though and I have now been taking turns with my dad and one older sister being a caregiver for my mom as she progresses through dementia. She has reached the stage where there is hardly any short term memory retention and the behavioral issues are through the roof. Caregiving is hard and each of us can only last about 6 months before we feel like we're losing it too. Thank goodness for a good tag team. My folks do still live in a cabin in the Rockies and my sister who helps with this lives out there too but a few hours from my parents. So she will take my mom for a few months to give dad a break, then he takes her back, then I take her for a few months and so it goes. Mom and dad have been with me in Florida since last October but are heading back to Colorado soon. Mom is close to needing a full time living arrangement and is approved for one in Colorado. She may enter that within the year. Dementia is a heartbreaking disease as you watch your loved on slowly forget who you are...they become locked inside their head...that's the easiest way to describe it. Anyway... This September I will be heading to Michigan where my girls and their families live. The newest grandchild is due September 3 and I plan to spend two weeks up there. Then I will hunker down until next spring when I plan to go visit my parents in Colorado. I have a small cottage just off the beach where I live with three wonderful fur kids (cats) and am loving my independence. I see so much dysfunction in relationships that I have no desire to revisit that, at least at this point in my life. Ok, that's it for my update. I hope to make a class reunion soon!!! I now communicate with many of you on Facebook and really want to meet up in person again! Until then...
