Aki's Story

Aki graduated in 1988 and went to Boston University. After getting her degree, she went to Japan to teach English for a few years. She married Ross Saggio, whom she met at B.U. They moved back to California and bought a house in Arcadia in 1996. Their first daughter was born in December of that year. They had a second daughter born in February of 2000. Aki and Ross separated in early 2001. She met Steven Hawkins while sharing a house in June of 2001. A relationship slowly developed and were officially a couple in September of 2001. In June of 2005, Aki and Steve welcomed their daughter into the world. Aki worked as a Senior Government Contracts Administrator and Facilities Security Officer(FSO) with Tanner Research, Sierracin and then Vacco Industries. Aki was heavily involved with the raising of her 3 girls. She was the Girl Scouts Troop Leader for her youngest daughter, and the team mom for practically every team her girls were on when playing soccer for AYSO. When her youngest started playing softball, she and Steve volunteered as board members for Arcadia's girls softball league and was the Director of Concessions for two years. Aki's desire to visit Hawaii became a reality in July of 2016. She absolutely loved it. She and Steve even discussed possible plans to move there one day. Aki and Steve enjoyed 15 years together from 2001 to 2016. They lived life as best they could with an emphasis on providing for the girls and raising them to the best of their ability. the utmost sadness to report that Aki passed away on August 20, 2016. She was relaxing that morning at the dining room table, drinking her coffee and playing her favorite game on her tablet. Soon after she got up from the table, she suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed to the floor. Steve ran from the other side of the house and was at her side within seconds to provide CPR and bring her back. Unfortunately, she passed away at the hospital less than one hour later. Official cause of death was a blood clot coming out of her leg and into her lungs. Aki was very healthy. She could jog for over an hour on the treadmill. The evening before she passed, she had swam 32 laps with her youngest daughter before going out to the Monrovia Street Fair for a walk. Birth Control pills were the cause for the blood clots in her legs. She had visited her primary doctor and a cardiologist the week of her passing due to tightness in her chest, rapid heart rate, dizzyness and cramping in her calves. They didn't catch it. Aki's funeral service was held at Forest Lawn - Glendale's Church of the Recessional with family, friends and colleagues completely filling the facility to standing-room only. On the weekend of December 2, 2016, Steve and all the girls flew to Hawaii and re-traced most of the places they had visited in July. Aki is at rest now in Waikiki. Rest in Peace, Aki. You were beautiful and an amazing person. You will forever be loved by Steve and your daughters for as long as they live.
