Al's Story

Life GPHS was, how to say..., interesting. Somehow I was allowed to graduate and after that I was allowed to go to U of O. Spent 5 years getting a History degree and having a very good time. Katie Smith ('82) joined me there, and after graduating we moved to Wash. DC. Nice place, but didn't want to stay, so when Katie was offered a job in Atlanta, we moved South. I got a job in Accounting and we spent 2 years getting a Southern education, another very good time. We were married in Grants Pass at Riverside Park in 1991, and took 10 friends on a week long "honeymoon" along the coast. We really enjoyed being back home. After returning to Atlanta we determined that Oregon was our place to be, and that we wanted our children to be raised there. So, we moved to Portland in 1992, had our first son (Forrest) in 1993 and our second son (Jackson) in 2000. I've spent my working life mostly as an Accountant or Controller, watching how money gets spent and e...Expand for more
arned, and watching more than one company go out of business. Katie and I are still going strong after 28 years, and really have had a great experience. The kids are a joy, well as much as kids can be, and its weird to be the "police officer" now that I'm the parent. Oh, and now Forrest has his learning permit and I get to teach him how to drive. You can only imagine how well that goes. Honestly, he's much better than I was. We're enjoying the Portland scene and definitely feel that we'll be here for a while. Somehow I keep finding myself in GP for the Boatnik, and now my kids kind of expect to be there. I still keep in touch with a number of Cavemen, CaveCubs, and Lincoln Lions, and it's amazing how long some of these relations have lasted. Who knows, maybe I'll run into you at the parade, or at the carnival, or at the Wonder Blur. It'd be nice to share a drink and memory, or maybe two, or three, or... Hope you're doing well and life's good.
