Al's Story

Greetings I retired from the USCG in 1982,after 9.5 years in the US Navy and serving on 4 ships and 2 shore stations. The USS Vermilion AKA-107, Norfolk, VA,. USS Sacramento AOE-1, Seattle, WA., USS Luzerne County LST-902, Vietnam, and the USS Ogden LPD-5, San Diego, CA. US Navy Radio Sta., Driver, VA and US Naval Air Station Alameda, CA. I received my discharge for the USN and enlisted in the USCG the same day and spend 10.5 years in the US Coast Guard. The highlight of my US Coast Guard career was when I was station on board the USCGC Cape Horn WPB 95322, a 95' Patrol Boat home ported in Woods Hole, MA., as a QMC and Executive Petty Officer. We were on Mass. Bay Patrol on 7 Feb 1980 and received a Mayday from the F/V Hattie Rose, a Gloucester based 75' stern trawler that was taking on water 15 miles off Cape Cod. Due to weather conditions 50/60 knot winds and 25' seas and poor visibility in the middle of the night the CG would not deploy an air rescue. At 11:58pm, 40 minutes after the 6 crew members of the Hattie Rose donned survival suit and tied themselves together and went into the water. As we were pulling them on board the CGC Cape Horn, the line broke and the last 2 crew members on the line went under the stern, using the spotlight and with the reflective tape on their survival suits, we were able to retrieve the last 2 crew members and head back into port. At times we were taking rolls up to 70 degrees, which didn't help in our rescue. We arrived back in Provincetown, MA. at 3:30 am. to happy family members that had drove down from Gloucester,MA. to meet the Cape Horn. We were awarded the Navy League Award for the most heroic rescue for 1980, and the Life Saving Medal from the City of Gloucester. Its hard to describe the feelings and emotions that you have when you rescue someone that thinks that they are not going to be rescued. Between the US Navy and the US Coast Guard I have visited 19 countries. After I retired from the USCG, I have worked for America C...Expand for more
ruise Lines as Chief Mate, NJROTC Instructor at Burton HS, and ran Charter fishing boat out of Cape May, NJ. We moved to Monroe,WA in 1983. I started with Wa. State DOC in Feb 1984, then in Sept 1984 I went to Saudi Arabia for a year as a Seamanship Instructor for the Royal Saudi Naval Training Center in Dammam, S.A. then returning to DOC in 1985. In July 1989 I went to work for Crowley Maritime to upgrade my 100 ton master license, but after 3 trips to Alaska, and 3 months later I went back to DOC until my retirement in May 2005. For the pass 14 years I have been working in a 4 story tower overlooking Twin Rivers Correctional Center, Monroe, WA. Life has been good to me and my wife Grace. We are going on 47 years of marriage, and my 2 sons Chris and Charles and Daughter Christina, whom has given us 8 wonderful grandchildren (6 boys & 2 girls), and all live within 5 miles of us. Note: I had a lot of problems with my 8th grade math teacher (Miss Elizabeth Oyer) I had her in 1958 in 8th grade math, as most of you know you had to keep all assignments in your note book, once I got behind there was no catching up. She placed me in the back of the room. I failed 8th grade math. I don't know why, but I got her again in 1959 for 8th grade math. another year of failure. In 1960 I got Mrs. Melcum, what a great teacher. Finally getting to high school. In December 1961 I quit school and joined the U.S. Navy. At my first duty assignment I was able to get my GED, in May 1962, a month before my class graduated. With math being my worst subject, I ended up working in Navigation which involved a lot of math. I wish I had graduated from high school, yet I have enjoyed my life path. I found a wonderful wife, that if I had stayed in school, would not have met. My first duty assignment was at a small US Naval Radio Station at Driver, VA. I went with a buddy to his home in June 1962, in upstate PA. and met Grace, We got married in Dec 1962. I hope I have not bored you with my bio.
