Al's Story

Life Didn't do my senior year at GBN. In earlier '74 my folks bought a 20 acre farm with a full complement of buildings and a beat-up house in Harvard, IL, where we gutted and added on to the old house and then moved in. (It was my first full scale residential wiring project at 17!) Even so, for a while it felt as if my life had turned upside-down. It sure was a change from my suburban upbringing in Northbrook! Well, I did survive, finished HS there and eventually got into the trades in Chicago as an electrician. "FAST FWD>>>" In '04, fearing the worst from my untimely retirement, I sold my home in Chi-town (a 2-flat I was rehabbing in Logan Square) and relocated to my property, a 71 mile drive NW of there and just on the edge of ...(where?!!?) yeahh, U guessed it ...Harvard IL, once again!! That's where I live, breathe, knock down walls, etc.. at the moment (guess some things never change). I think I'm finally acclimated to retirement now (albeit too early as it was) and it's all good ..city life is still in my bones, so I have plenty of reasons/excuses to drop back in. Never know what's next but life for me is and always has been one big adventure, soooo ...stay tuned! Deep down, though, when I think of it ..guess I'll always be an electrician. Heyyy ..What can I sayyyy? I still love to work w/ the tools of the trade. Survived a cancer bout in '02 and then in '04 was forced into retirement on disab due to some back and leg issues unrelated to the earlier mess. After surgery, getting my walk back (yet a bit shaky) and PT, I was informed that I reached the end of that road and was done with the working world as I knew it. These days I do take advantage of the extra available free time to trave...Expand for more
l as finances permit ..(LOL). I do love to travel and now, more than ever before, there's more time on my side to do so. This winter '09-'10 I was lured by an old friend to Wilton Manors (Ft Lauderdale) FL. I had a blast there over Halloween so I started 2010 on a warm note there as well. 2013 started OK ..but not liking this cold weather crap ..so I get outta' town when I can. Being lured to CA by friends there so that'll be upcoming very soon ..but I still live in the Midwest ..that hasn't changed as of yet. * Current news flash: Still living cancer free & that's a "Big Up"! Soooo ..go ahead, give me a shout sometime! COMMENTS, MUSINGS & RAMBLINGS: If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have fully caffeinated joe, a 2nd cup, and a 3rd cup to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My current age is 53. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be nearly dead. I was so completely amazed to know I've lived this long and have alot of life to live yet.. In 10 years, I hope to be in a warm winter climate. I'm going to get there by selling whatever I own here.. When the Crown family moved in next door. I was, maybe, 7 at the time. There was a knock at the front door and 8 kids (#9 was a baby & #10 was still a twinkle in the eye..) lined up outside intoducing themselves as the new neighbors. This would start an enduring chapter in my life. We've all moved on but we still like to think of us all as an extended family. I always wanted to be an electrician when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good enough idea. As it turns out, they were all as nuts as I am but the career choice turned out to be OK>. I go for long, stupid, aimless but very cool and enjoyable drives.
