Alan's Story

Although I've been to many cities throughout the U.S. for business or pleasure, and have visited many other interesting places around the world, from Sweden to Greece to Bali and more, this NB graduate has always preferred to live in the NYC-metro area. Since NB High, I've bben a restaurant manger, done advertising and marketing for two savings banks, have been a paralegal, a director of business development, an I/T consultant in the banking industry, conducted market research at IBM, and currently work at Banana Republic, at our new store on Broadway in SoHo... if you're ever in the city, please stop in it's b/w Spring and Prince) to say hello, and perhaps buy a fabulous cashmere sweater, or something else to make you feel good. I lived on the upper West Side in Manhattan from 1990 - 2007, and now live in Elmhurst, Queens... which is much cheaper, with a huge backyard and a wonderful garden. When I'm not at work, or at the Fire Island Pines on Summer weekends, I'm a volunteer at fund-raisers and other events for several community organizations, including Saint Peter's Lutheran Church (jazz committe), Heritage of Pride, and the NYC Gay Men's Chorus. I haven't played the tenor sax since my "touring days" with the N.B.H.S. Marching Band but it's more fun to enjoy the free concerts in Central Park, and sing with the NYC Gay...Expand for more
Men's Chorus. I joined in 2004, and sing bass (I'm actually the lowest-voiced bass in the group). I've performed at Lincoln Center, on Broadway and in Carnegie hall with this out, proud 250-member organization that has been around for 30 years. We were recently designated as one of the top five community/non-professional choral groups in NYC by WQXR, the classical radio station of the NY Times. On a more 'blue-collar' note, I've been in various bowling leagues over the years, through work or other organizations. Okay, so it's not the NFL, but hey, I won a Bronze Medal in bowling (pairs) in Amsterdam in 1998 at the Gay Games, an international Olympic-style athletic tournament, and got a Gold medal (4-person team) at the Games in Sydney, Australia in 2002. Through all these years, my hair is still basically blond, with a little silver mixed in now... and it's all pretty much still on my head; I'm probably in better shape than I was in 1973 (I was a skinny nerd, who hated gym class). Overall, life is good. There's lots more that can be told, but that should certainly be enough to round it out fairly well. I joined this site long ago, when it was free... so now I'm kinda reluctant to have to pay Classmates.com just to read other people's bios, but feel free to contact me if you'd like to know more, at: aja429 at gmail.com :-)
