Alan's Story

Life I was born in Hillsboro, Oregon, on July 14th, 1956, the fourth of 6 children. I remember little of Hillsboro. My father was a home mission pastor, and as a result we moved a lot. Once Dad established a mission we would move. Kindergarten and first grade were spent in Pocatello, Idaho. We moved then to Pennsylvania, where Dad worked in the national office of the old Lutheran Church in America (LCA) for two years. My most formative years were spent in Bozeman Montana, my heart’s home, where I spent from 4th Grade to my sophomore year in High School. There I learned to hunt, fish, and camp, climb, and discovered my love for the Lutheran Church. The summers at Bible Camp outside Livingston, Montana still stand out in my mind. High School was finished at East Anchorage High (a school of over 3,000). My father moved to Anchorage to take over a failing mission congregation. I hated school in Alaska, and thanks to superior education in Bozeman, graduated in February, mid way through my senior year, working full-time at F. W. Woolworth’s in downtown Anchorage. I hated school, but loved Alaska, where I enjoyed hiking and canoeing, and a deeper love for the church. Luther League (our church youth group) was my lifeline to sanity. I chose to go to Midland Lutheran College. I went to Midland to get an education and to find a wife. I was successful on both counts. I started with a religion and philosophy major as I knew I was going on to seminary, but on the advice of my advisor, took up an education major to compliment my ministry as a pastor after seminary. It was one of the smarter things I have done. My first year at college, I met my wife, Charlene (Char), and we and that year pretty well figured out we would be getting married when we finished school, and did so in December our senior year. We were married December 30th, 1977. Char and I worked a year after college to help pay off debts and prepare for seminary. She worked at a coun...Expand for more
try school near Scribner, and I worked for Goodyear Service Store in Fremont. I took my time going through seminary, adding an extra year to my 4 year program to absorb the Greek and Hebrew which were required of me, and to work part-time. It was a stressful but good time. Money was always short, but friendships and intellectual stimulation were at their strongest. My son, Jake was born at seminary on July 22nd, 1982. I was ordained in 1984, at age 28. My first call was to Longview, Washington, and Stella Lutheran Chapel. I received my call to the Army Chaplaincy in 1986, and celebrated my 30th birthday in boot camp and Chaplain Officer Basic at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Char, pregnant with Jenny, stayed with her folks in Central City, Nebraska, while I finished boot camp. Our first station was Fort Ord, California, where Jenny was born on December 23rd, 1986, an early Christmas present, arriving home Christmas Day. From Fort Ord I was deployed to the Sinai on a 6-month peacekeeping mission, and to Operation Just Cause in Panama. In 1990 we were stationed in Dexheim, Germany. From there I was deployed to the Gulf War. On September 12th, 1992, Brigit was born in Heidelberg, Germany. Quite a shock, as I had a vasectomy in 1987, after we had our boy and girl and what we thought was the right size family! Shortly after Brigit’s birth, I was RIFed from the Army (Reduction In Forces), and returned to civilian life at Cozad, Nebraska. I stayed in the Army Reserves until 1998, when it became apparent there was no hope for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and I resigned my commission. I started my Master’s in Human Services Counseling at UNK, and continued it at Wayne State College, after taking a call to Wisner, Nebraska. I currently serve Peaks of Glory Lutheran Parish in Big Timber and Melville, Montana. While putting myself through school I have been a mechanic, carpenter, janitor, groundskeeper, and all-around handyman.
